Business Insider AU: Costco’s generous return policy is ripe for abuse — here’s what could happen if shoppers take it too far

Costco is known for having a very generous return policy. Members can return almost any product at any time if they are not satisfied with it.

Some members, however, may see this as an opportunity to return worn or used items several years after buying them. A Costco spokesperson told Business Insider that it is up to the discretion of each store manager to make a decision about whether to process a return, which can be confusing for some shoppers.

Making frequent returns can jeopardize your membership status. While Costco says there is no limit to the number of returns a customer can make, at least one member who spoke with Business Insider said her membership was canceled after making a number of returns.

Handsomedan:... what "qualifying" entails. ...

Again, my information regarding Costco membership dates back when we qualified for it in 1994 when we purchased the champagne for our wedding (my wife remembered this fact!).

There was a long list of possible ways to qualify: member of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc) , work for the emergency services (NHS workers, fire brigade, police, etc) , professional qualification (doctor, accountant, teacher, etc). In education (full-time or part-time students) and I think even being retired would qualify you for membership.

So you see, its difficult to NOT qualify in some way.

Looking at the Australian site the only qualification for membership is you can pay $60 per year. Imo the rest is fomo marketing. The range of goods and services on the AU site menu is spectacular if not dystopian - https://www.costco.com.au/

One little known fact is that Costco membership is global - if you have a membership issued in New Zealand, you can use it to shop in Australia, the US, the UK, and so on, same for Australian, UK or US memberships.

The member price at the fuel station (noting that you must be a member to use it) is significantly cheaper than any other major chain, and if NZ stations are anything like Australian ones, there will be a 5-10km radius around Costco where petrol prices are depressed to saner levels.

Still looks a long way from completion though.

as far as i know, the building frame is already there, lights are also installed for the builder to continue their work. but they still haven't put the wall at all?

on the opposite of the supermarket, the petrol station (again the frame is there) is also being setup as well.

That's a long way away from the CBD...or almost anywhere. I don't know if people from Pukekohe (for example) would travel all the way out there just to have a look.

They will. Costco, and IKEA, are destination stores. It’s a well proven model.

Yes - I have a friend in AU who is an hour from Costco. Makes a special trip for Costco and anything else in that area that they don’t have locally.

It's about 15 - 20min from the CBD, and about 25min from the airport, outside of peak traffic. That's really not far. Plus it doesn't cost you $812/minute to park out there ;)
