You're definitely not locked into the Nespresso ecosystem. We have lots of Nespresso pods, but we've used Starbucks, Avalanche, Allpress, Coffeecapsules2u, there's even a Baileys flavoured one we've tried (original, not Vertuo). My opinion is that Nespresso tastes the best, but there's a lot of options out there and generally they're all cheaper than Nespresso.

trying to get a GOOD cuppa into & out of those original tiny PODs was never going to happen.....unless you're one of those who dump in sugar, shame on you  (coffee milkshake) :-)

I drink espresso - short, 40ml coffee extracted from the pod. If you use a high intensity, high roasted coffee pod to extract a full mug then you will get crap.

If you want a mug like Americans do or like the one you get from a French press then you have to use the lungo version of the pods. These are not roasted to extreme levels and not as intense.

As for being different. Yes, instant coffee is mainly produced by making a coffee paste, freeze drying then breaking it into bits. When you add water the coffee reconstitutes.

Espresso is made by pushing hot water through roasted coffee beans under pressure to extract the oils and create that crema - a caramel-like substance made from emulsifying the natural oils in the coffee. It helps break the bitter taste of the coffee.

So yes, very different things.

I think the reason behind the new system is so that they can lock out other suppliers this time. They thought they had the intellectual property side of things sewn up with the original pods, but when it was challenged in court, they lost and the ecosystem was open for anyone to make pods.

I like the pod system, as I don't drink enough coffee to use up a bag while it is still fresh. If there is a vertuo lungo pod that I like the taste of, then I will buy a machine, if only to be able to tell people I have a centrifuge in my kitchen!

This is an example of a pod. This is a long black over ice. That barcode tells the machine how much water to push through, for how long and at what speed it rotates.

Here’s hoping for the original pods to continue to stay alive so we continue to get alternatives…

Else, fingers crossed Nespresso isn’t allowed to monopolise the supply chain by preventing others from manufacturing compatible pods for Vertuo…

That way we all can continue to enjoy our coffee the way we like it…

That James Hoffman review, linked to back on a reply on page one, is a bit of a savaging. I love his use of a blender to replicate the "crema" (or coffee foam as he calls it!). It's clear from the video it has nothing like the looks or texture of true crema; an equivalent to the attempt those Nespresso milk frother things do to generate a simulation of textured milk.

I do get the convenience factor of Nespresso generally (and a Nespresso machine was no doubt the only coffee machine an elderly relative of mine could use, after she started putting the stovetop espresso on the gas ithout water or coffee), and the desire to generate a cup of coffee that is stronger than that produced by a single pod, but not convinced by this product or what it produces (especially given it's a clear attempt by Nestle - not the most charming company - to regain control of pod sales).

What do these machines and pods sell for? I couldn't see them on the NZ Nespresso site so may have been looking in the wrong place...

Currently only have the Next machines which have typically had issues worldwide - Nespresso have normally replaced or upgraded them under warranty elsewhere so hopefully they will do that here in NZ too.  Current promotion if you purchase a machine is $80 worth of coffee credit.

Press release:

Nespresso has solidified its position as the pioneer and reference for highest-quality coffee once again, with the introduction of their newest innovation to join the Vertuo family, Vertuo Pop. Delivering endless coffee styles to explore with and elevate any coffee moment, Vertuo Pop also adds a burst of colour to any coffee corner.

With over 20 blends of sustainably sourced roast and ground coffee in five different capsule sizes to choose from, Nespresso’s Vertuo range has a coffee capsule for every coffee lover. From New Zealander's favourite double shot flat white to modern craft brew styles, Vertuo Pop can do it all with a single capsule to craft your perfect coffee at the simple touch of one button.

Proving that big things come in small packages, Vertuo Pop features Nespresso’s intelligent Centrifusion technology, which analyses the code on every capsule and adjusts brewing parameters to prepare your perfect cup.  Additionally, Vertuo Pop utilises Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity which, when paired with your Nespresso App, updates automatically to ensure Kiwis can enjoy a seamless coffee experience time and time again—from enjoying the newest flavours and coffee styles that are introduced to the Vertuo range.

Available in six colourways, Vertuo Pop is an accessible entry to Nespresso that also gives design-lovers the freedom to personalise and add a style statement to their space, from classic Liquorice Black or Coconut White, to vibrant and playful Spicy Red, Mango Yellow, Aqua Mint or Pacific Blue.

Minimalism is in, and Vertuo Pop makes a big statement by going small. Vertuo Pop is Nespresso’s smallest and most accessible Vertuo machine to date, retailing at $269.00 NZD each. The compact style means the machine can easily fit into any kitchen or workspace no matter the size – perfect for first homes, office spaces or university.
