Handsomedan:

I think this is the issue - we "remember" things - but actually we often mis-remember things too. Plus we combine memories, so one movie in our head is actually likely two or three.

Sometimes you can remember scenes from a film that have been edited out later for the version that ends up on video or streaming. Films on planes are often cut to a more G rated version.

Handsomedan:

I can't find anything on my usual search spots.

Very interesting...and will keep me going for a while I think

@Handsomedan did you ever remember what movie it was (or might have been)?

Sadly no. Not a thing. Even a year on I’m stumped.

I just asked Google Bard based on your original description. It suggested Final Destination as one option, which I know you ruled out, and then this...

The movie you are describing is most likely The Car (1977), a sci-fi horror film directed by Elliot Silverstein and starring James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, and Ronny Cox. The film follows a demonic black car that terrorizes a small town in New Mexico. The scene you describe is one of the most famous in the film, and it is still quite shocking today.

Here is a more detailed description of the scene:

A young couple, Ronny Cox and Kathleen Lloyd, are driving down a highway at night. They are following a logging truck when two logs fall off the truck and land on the couple's car. The logs crush the car and kill the couple instantly.

The scene is very graphic, and it is one of the most memorable scenes in the film. It is also one of the most disturbing, as it shows the couple being killed in a very sudden and violent way.

Not seen the movie myself so no idea. Is it The Car?

ChatGPT took more coaxing as it was fixated on Final Destination 2 (even though you had said a 70s or 80s movie) and it eventually suggested:

Given that the movie you're thinking of is from the 70s or 80s, and you mentioned it was a horror movie with a scene involving a logging truck accident, it's possible that the film you're looking for is "The Long Weekend" (also known as "Nature's Grave" or "The Savage"), released in 1978. In this film, a couple goes on a camping trip in Canada, and there's a scene where they encounter a logging truck accident that results in a fatal incident. It's known for its environmental and horror elements. This film matches the description you provided.

I did see that one on TV at high school and it's definitely not that one - but thanks, that's a good one to rewatch, although the special effects can look a little hokey today 😀

Will have a look at Long Weekend although I note that's an Australian one so possibly not quite right...but will see. Thanks again.
