Some of these 'price promise' deals are a bit of a sham anyway, or at least there is more going on behind the scenes. I recently purchased a Karcher petrol water blaster from my local Mitre10. Retail was $799.99. Supercheap had them on special for $599.99.

This reminds me that we did the same thing with a woodburner, when a local store had it on special, and another other retailer had to give 15% off because they hadn't yet reduced their price to under that special price. I recall they quickly put their products on sale the next day.

The manager/owner flat out refused to match it (this is a locally owned Mitre10) at first and complained that Karcher is supposed to give them advance warning if another retailer was offering a special so they could adjust there prices accordingly.

That's the advantage of Bunnings being a billion-dollar foreign-owned company, no-one working in the stores has any skin in the game so they're quite happy to keep the customer happy.

The downside is that you're then giving money to a billion-dollar foreign-owned company.

Why is that a downside? We do it all the time when we buy cars, computers, clothes etc.

Just got a hand mixer, RRP $99.99, for $41 from Briscoes using their price-match-and-10% policy since a couple of other places were selling it for $45. So it's well worth it if you're getting brand-name stuff stocked across multiple retailers.

At least Briscoes still beat prices by 10%. I hope therefore this isn't a trend, as when companies buy up other companies, it isn't supposed to lesson competition, as that is not good for the consumer
