We are within walking distance of Westgate, so won’t need to worry about traffic jams. That said, I’m not planning on visiting for at least the first week and certainly not in the weekend.

Also, from the reality distortion thrown up by Costco marketing, you need at least an SUV and trailer to carry away all the amazing bargains :).

.. just popping in for a cheap cup of sugar is certainly not keeping up appearances, although you will be able to report if they do have any pedestrian access, or just a huge airfield of a carpark....

Nice. A very good start.

I for one welcome to the opening tomorrow and will enviously await our proposed store in Christchurch whenever that one opens.

“The benefit” is such an odd way to put it. Which one? There are, I believe, many types and people often get more than one. So “off benefits” seems more correct.

Off benefits is more grammatically correct.
It was more referring to the Job Seeker Support.

Was their on Monday to pick up a card.

Setup is quite pedestrian friendly. Main entrance is on the corner of Gunton Drive & Maki St. There is a bit of a park / garden area in the area between the building in the street.

So as a pedestrian you just stroll through the landscaped area area, and through the main doors into the lobby, and (assuming no queue, keep walking straight ahead to the entry door. Retail is all on the ground floor. two levels of parking are above the retail (top level open air), so people arriving by car's will need to catch a travelator or elevator down.

Quite impressive treatment of walk in's given with 800 car-parks, and massive trolleys, it is clear they think the vast majority of people will come by car.

On walking perhaps fine if you are just picking up a roast chicken or something, but could be a bit of a challenge if you decide to buy the 48 pack of toilet paper, and 25kg of white sugar...

As a side note, they do sell those folding beach cart's that are rated for some epic amount of weight...

On traffic management, based on having sign's up for days, it seems they will have a fairly hefty traffic management plan for the opening few days.

May be an image of map

I would guess that preventing tail backs onto the motorway is a key goal.

I just cannot see why anyone would brave the crowds (90% sure it’s going to be disgustingly packed) on opening week just to try save a couple bucks.

Not worth it in my opinion, much prefer to wait till the dust settles.

My comment was more to do with the opening day traffic jam not really affecting me (unless I want to pick up something large from Harvey Norman) because I could walk to Costco. Having experienced their warehouses in the USA and Australia, “popping in for only 5 things” is possible but unlikely, so a vehicle will be required.
Despite being so close, our plan is a monthly visit, or maybe fortnightly. Except for fuel for our ICE vehicles, because Costco fuel is regularly 10c/l cheaper than other local outlets.

I’m a little perplexed about the hype that has people queuing for hours for the opening. It’s not like it’s a new iPhone 😏

I signed up online yesterday and won't be going in to activate my membership/pick up my card for at least a week or two.

I have no desire to get caught in the crush.

I hope those red arrows don't indicate one way traffic, or else I'm not going to be able to do the daycare run without sitting in the same traffic as Costco for the sake of a tedious loop.

Doesn't look like one way traffic - roads are operating as normal, just a bit busy according to Google Maps.

Those opening deals don't seem inline with the specials of openings elsewhere. A bit disappointing. I had hoped they might have a shipment of Masterbuilt BBQ's or something ala Australia.

Still wouldn't have camped out for them though.

Yeah, agreed. The 'Opening Specials' they've advertised online don't seem special enough to warrant getting into the scrum.
