The "Make an offer" is only available for buyers via the TM app, so they may not have had ability to use it, hence the question :)
Well that seems like a strange omission by TM.
This is par for the course with Trademe. They introduced messaging functionality recently, but it only works on the app. If a buyer messages you through the app but you don't use notifications enabled for the app, then you don't get any notification that they've messaged you, and they wonder why you aren't responding.
More broadly, these third party workarounds wouldn't be needed if TM actually policed their marketplace with some basic bulk processes to ban (or at least warn) users with poor feedback. I had a time waster win one of my auctions, and consistent with their feedback history they ghosted me. By my estimate, their rating had been in the order of 50% positive for over nine months before they bid on my auction (in other words, every second auction win they decided not to go through with). I emailed Trademe and they made some blanket statement around expecting a feedback rating of at least 95% - but clearly they don't do anything proactive in enforcing that. It would not be hard to run a monthly process warning users with a sub 95% feedback rating of an impending ban, and banning them the following month if the rating deteriorates further.
