Two items I sent/received with NZ Post Couriers via TradeMe this week.

Item 1:  Sent from Napier to Dunedin.  Picked up from me at 3pm one day, delivered in Dunedin at 9am the next day.

Item 2: Sent from Auckland to Napier.  Picked up 11am Thursday, delivered in Napier 12pm Saturday.

No rhyme or reason to it in terms of speed but it definitely feels like we are poorly served by courier services in NZ, regardless of the company.  They are all generally slow and incapable of providing consistent overnight delivery between two locations it seems.

Geektastic:

Why not just quit the market if you can’t do the job?

They can't, we have international agreements about international postage.

I recall some years ago helping a friend sort through family archives and finding an old postcard (from the early 1920's I think) sent across Wellington from Thorndon to Newtown, indicating that they expected the recipient would receive the postcard that day in the second mail delivery. The postcard was arranging an afternoon tea meet-up for the following day and expecting confirmation in the first mail delivery of that following day!

Growing up in the U.K. in the 70’s we still had second delivery and Saturday delivery of normal post and a First Class stamp was expected to be next day delivery. Like everything, I’m sure it’s not as good as it used to be.

All this tech promised to speed up and improve everything but seems to overpromise and under deliver. It’s bizarre that sending a letter takes longer today than 50 years ago.

I send hundreds of parcels via NZ Post Courier every month for my business, and the past couple of months have been the worst I've seen in the last 10 years for delays.

I really don't know what's going on. NZ Post currently only admit to typical delays of 1-2 working days across the country, but I'm getting a significant number of parcels taking up to 5 days to arrive, and some taking 10 days or longer. There is no pattern that I can see. In the past, I've been consistently getting a very high proportion of non-rural deliveries arriving the next working day.

The delays with some other couriers (Aramex!) are even worse.

Have you noticed that they take so long to respond to your enquiry that the parcel is delivered before they answer so that they can just say that it was delivered and close it?

And never have I had so many delivered to the wrong place or not had ATL instructions followed.

Yes, same here. The queries for missing deliveries are the slowest I’ve seen in a long time. They’re currently asking people not to even open an investigation until a parcel is more than 5 days overdue, so they must know about the delays. I had one courier parcel recently which took almost 4 weeks to arrive, and the only response I got from NZ Post was after 4 weeks to tell me it had been delivered. I’d already covered the cost of a replacement by then, so it was my loss. Unfortunately, there is no better alternative courier service available.

I suspect they’re just short staffed, and aren’t coping with the increasing volumes.

CourierPost lost a new S22 after it arrived at their sorting center. I assume an employee got a five finger discount.

Well, my parcel FINALLY turned up.

I am assuming the parcel flew from Christchurch to Auckland, then flew to Palmerston North, its not like we need to look after the environment is it.

It seems my courier stuff to work from real shops is fine, as is kmart to home. My PB tech order is coming by PBT which I think is punishment for using the FREESHIP code and is taking forever.

At least yours moved from Christchurch to Auckland. Mine are two days behind the estimated time going from one side of Auckland to the other. I think the only reason it's even recorded as picked up was because I took it to a post shop rather than waiting for them to collect.

The annoying thing is that this is no longer "we're currently a bit backlogged but will clear things eventually", it's just the normal state of affairs. Why do they continue to give fantasy ship times that they can never hope to achieve? If they just gave real estimates it'd be less annoying than repeatedly getting imaginary delivery dates.

New one for me this week.  Item with targeted delivery of 2 days from Northland took 8 to arrive at the depot down in Wellington.  No card to call etc. but on tracking said "Ready to Collect" and the post center it was at.

So I went down there and said I have no card just the tracking number and they found it.  She said to me you might get the card to call in the next couple days.  I have cameras so I know they didnt try to deliver it.  Sure enough today 2 days later a card to call was left in the letterbox.

So now they are just not delivering and suggesting they did - to me this is fraudulent. It cost over $13 to send, and took 4x as long as it should, and then they place a card to call suggesting they tried to deliver it but could not, even though that did not happen.

That sounds very odd, although there are a lot of delivery issues in and around Wellington at the moment.

They've opened a new "Super Depot" to sort parcels, and there seem to have been many problems with getting it up and running correctly.
