New World in Rotorua use it and they put the pictures of the person up on a big board at the entrance to the shop who have been trespassed or of interest, and i wonder if the face recognition program is racist because of the 50 or so faces on the board there is not one white person on it and i dont believe that only Māori or Polynesians are the only people breaking the law.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Shocker-It's in a lot more places than just supermarkets....

Source, we install it.

You can opt out by not entering the establishment.  By walking over the threshold, you consent.  Data retention though, whole other can of worms

I don't have a huge issue with it if its anon, do you know if your systems are tied back to identifiable information? e.g. this facial profile is attached to this loyalty card

No, you would need to opt in to have that recorded.

Payment kiosks for eg.  Take a better full face pic than the elevated cameras.  If you're pinching it clearly shows the person of interest better

Shops etc will have to be clear about this and a small sign and or stepping over the threshold will meet Principle Three of the Act...

"When an organisation collects personal information, it must take reasonable steps to make sure that the person knows:

  • why it’s being collected
  • who will receive it
  • whether giving it is compulsory or voluntary
  • what will happen if the information isn’t provided."

With the multitude of devices, websites etc that track your information, I would think facial recognition at the supermarket would be well down on the list of concerns...

I don't completely agree with this. If the store is not advertising they use such a system then you are unaware of your choice.

There is a huge amount of information and data matching that potentially could occur from this. Especially if that data is then on sold. Many people only have a  single choice of supermarket, as many towns only have one  supermarket. Plus if one starts to do it, others will too, and we only have two main operators in NZ due to the duopoly. I have sympathy that they want to use it to reduce shrinkage, but it is the other things that that data could be used for that is the issue, many are things we may not have even thought about.

It's another good reason to wear a mask.

I just wonder how long it will be before supermarkets try and ban mask wearing, with the excuse of security. Yet it wasn't an issue when everyone was wearing a mask.

I disagree because we don't know the future potential for this technology and how that data could be used.  A website you can essentially opt out of tracking or choose not to use. People have to shop for food. It is an essential service after all.

Supermarkets already track your data, biometric specific or not - they know who shops, when, what direction people take, where to place items for maximum return, what music to play, what scents to have wafting through specific areas etc etc etc.

With the increase in crime and theft, I have no issue at all with measures that help identify and prevent this, afterall, the costs of these thefts are being passed on to the honest consumers already.

Opting to use a card is very optional. This camera tech it would seem is not and it is already implemented. This was the first I heard that it's already in use and I don't recall seeing any opt out or opt in notices.
The cameras don't exempt the very young which is very disturbing.

I am also saddened and concerned that folks meekly accept erosion of rights, privacy and security.

If you think this won't be abused think again, our police abused the technology.

Well it looks like we can make an information request

At the moment, the only way for a consumer to know whether their biometric data had been collected by Foodstuffs was to make a request for that data under the Privacy Act.

As for the comments along the lines of don't go into the Foodstuffs stores, there are many areas in Aotearoa where there is no choice, example large areas of the Wairarapa.
That notion is invalid.

Speaking strictly within scope of supermarket use can you elaborate on what this abuse will look like.  From my  (albeit limited to mainstream media) observations retailers occasionally overstep the mark but generally operate within the law.

Shoplifters on the other hand are blatant law-breakers and, in-line with sen8or's sentiment, crime is increasing and the government is doing nothing about it.  I support shop owners doing whatever they can to protect themselves (physically and financially), their staff and their honest customers.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
