He religiously watches the 6pm news, so as a result, I am usually hovering doing other things. What I would say is, that 60 min slot is wholly unnecessary and everything that is truly newsworthy could be dealt with in 15 - 30 mins.

Would probably be a hoot. But I don't want to start down that rabbit hole. Flat Earthers on Reddit are bad enough.

It's a pity that TVNZ 7 met its demise. I used to watch that back in the day for a 10 minute round-up of news.

I only read news so I hadn’t noticed.

There’s no particular reason other than NZ engaging Holiday Mode as a nation all at once, I guess.

It used to be 30 minutes from 6 each weeknight on TVNZ, followed by Holmes, and all finished by 7. Then (from memory) the Gulf War came along in 1991 and suddenly there was so much to report on the news needed to be an hour long, pushing Holmes out to 7 o'clock. It's been that way ever since.

I couldn't receive TV3 when it started in late 1989, but I imagine it was probably a similar story there with their news and current affairs shows.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that TV3 pioneered the hour long bulletin. TVNZ extended theirs to compete.

Given the amount of already obvious filler on TVNZ 6pm news last night, I was surprised they didn't manage to squeeze in 60 seconds on the Peka Peka Expressway opening - although I guess that would have meant dispatching a camera operator who is probably already on leave 😄

That rings a bell, I think TV3 started it around the time of the Gulf War and TVNZ just followed suit.

The thought of watching FTA tv, something I have not done in years, nor expecting to get quality news from said services is something I just cannot get my head around, I would rather slam my hand repeatedly in a cutlery draw than be subject to news via a FTA tv source.

IMO, news could actually be reported once a week other than for rare events.

To be honest most of what they report isn’t really news and isn’t especially useful to know.

I think they’ve lulled everybody into believing the world will end if they don’t get “news” several times a day. It really won’t.
