It isn't like there is less news to report on, but every years the main FTA channels dramatically reduce their news coverage, and drop their breakfast programming. At-least this week they're keeping the late bulletins, but we're still a week away from xmas so why the dramatic drop in coverage now?

Reporters and main presenters and crews are on holiday?

Stu: Reporters and main presenters and crews are on holiday?

That would be my guess.

I can't imagine any other logical explanation.

I've noticed in January and early February there are a lot of junior reporters on whatever crops up. I'd say that they must just get called in to work the news desks and often find themselves out in the field at these various events while the seasoned reporters are off on holidays.

And it usually starts about now.

Looking at the recent reporter swaps they've already been dealing with trying to cover COVID cases.

I've noticed they tend to follow the school holidays, so since most kids are now off it makes sense they are too.

The quality of reporting doesn't suffer though. It couldn't get any worse than normal.

Parliament has risen and the next Cabinet Meeting is next year, so the political noise and therefore volume is reduced.

I hope we get to see more of Daniel Faitaua in 2023. He is a very good reporter.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I really like him as a reporter not so much as a news anchor

Xmas parties were mass Covid spreading events. Many of our bigger clients are down 50+% of staff, wouldn't surprise me if this was affecting every industry.

Silly me. I always thought that news just didn't happen on weekends and holidays!

Parliament is certainly a big factor.

I'd also mention people that generate press releases - commentators, PR folk, data analysts, etc - all go on leave or deliberately don't release stuff at at time when they know more folk than usual will be on leave. For example, Stats NZ won't release anything juicy this week so commentators don't have data releases to talk about. The news pretty much dries up unless there's a car crash or reporters conjure up a feel good piece.

In terms of the specific timing, I'd suggest that schools finishing up for the year at the end of last week has a lot to with shows like Breakfast going into recess this week. It's just a long lull period this year with Christmas Day landing on a Sunday, rather than earlier in the week. We don't normally get a 'full' work week before Christmas.

I haven't watched fta TV in years but a while back moved in with my father to take care of him and keep him out of a rest home. He religiously watches the 6pm news, so as a result, I am usually hovering doing other things. What I would say is, that 60 min slot is wholly unnecessary and everything that is truly newsworthy could be dealt with in 15 - 30 mins.

I find that ABC, BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN (less so now) and most other news organisations can fill a 60 minute slot without too much difficulty. We live in a big world. The problem with newscasting here is that the people doing it aren't sure what news is.

Yep - and this happens on a weekly cycle too. There are a lot of items on TVNZ News on Saturdays and Sundays that are not news. My guess is they record stuff during the week and show it over the weekend to fill up the news hour - so that only a skeleton crew of reporters is needed over the weekend. Maybe this happens on Three too - not sure about that.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
