Bung:

Supposedly a potential problem with a few addresses.

"The spokesperson said this was due to a programming error that meant 95% of addresses with an apostrophe would not receive their letters. Because of this, 2300 letters were reprinted and resent."

Just use one code and toss the other.

There never has been any apostrophe for my address.  It would be grammatically abhorrent to try an apostrophe.

Q: If someone used your address falsely would it generate an additional letter?  I've had to stop the IRD from sending documents to someone who has never lived at my address.

The media has picked up on this: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2023/02/what-to-do-if-you-receive-two-census-letters.html

A Stats NZ spokesperson said the second letter is a pre-census reminder letter that includes a new access code and a "call to action" to complete Census forms by March 7.

"It is also a call to action to contact 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) to order paper forms if preferred."

The spokesperson added households that have already had a census pack delivered will also receive a second letter.

Stats NZ says households can use either the new access code or the original one provided to their address.  Both are valid and private to their address.

Seems like a huge waste of resources if this is correct though...

Almost 1.4 million households across Aotearoa would've received a second Census letter this week with a new access code.

I got a second letter today too.

The first letter had all the (unnecessary for me) forms and the access code but the second one only had the access code.

No, because that's not how the census works. They don't care who you are - well they do, but they don't care what your name is - it's all based around the dwelling and the number of people who reside there on census night, 7 March.

Last time it was a complete mess, I didn't even fill anything in, supposedly someone else did it for the whole house. But I thought it should only be done on the actual day, otherwise you could get a duplication of people at different addresses . Some people wouldn't know if they are going to be at a particular address on the 7th and peoples plans may change. But guessing everyone hitting the same website on the evening of the 7th may cause problems

Yes so did we. Seems an unnecessary waste.

A lady came around on Friday and hand delivered the forms.

Had a code to use to fill in online but also had 6 or so paper forms in the envelope. Quite a waste of paper to be honest, even though we said we would fill it out online.

Have to say I disagree - every household should get the paper forms AND have the option of completing online.  Every household that completes online should be able to tick a box on the first page of the household form to indicate that it has been completed online, that can be verified either by the census collector or after collation.

You need to make this as easy and accessible as possible for every household to ensure data collection is complete and robust.  A cross check of the online code with the paper version should eliminate duplication and non-compliance (with the prerequisite follow up visit from the census collector).

I've not received any forms or digital codes?

Should they be getting put in every letterbox?

Every person in New Zealand should have a code to complete the census.
Census is not an optional survey to complete.

I wouldn't lose any sleep about it, it may still turn up.

I haven't seen one yet.  Possibly because we don't have a mailbox at the moment, due to an incident in involving a boat trailer, which I may have been reversing at the time it annihilated the mailbox 🤡.
