Could be very ominous application of

"Move fast and break things"

Absolutely where the *real* danger lies. AI is just a tool.

Whether it's a screwdriver, a scalpel, or a sword depends on who's wielding it. The fact is that people most likely to wield it first are the Thiels, Musks and Zuckerbergs of this world. Or equally as bad but in a different way, the wonks you've never heard of that run the HFT systems generating profits for themselves from the arbitrage of a 10ms head start.

That's a bit of a strange take on things isn't it. The chances of an asteroid strike are miniscule compared to the factual climate change that is already happening.

Depends on your definition of “destruction”.

If it’s “Total obliteration, all gone, no one left”, then I very much stand by my take on things.

If its “your life has been destroyed because your favourite cafe no longer serves Soy Lattes” then you stick with your facts.

We have an advantage that AI can't overcome - we don't run on electricity from a wall socket.

That depends on what you define as AI?

If its on the internet then no pulling electricity from some wall sockets will not stop it because the internet will just re-route traffic. You going to have a very hard time unpowering the internet. This is the AI that is coming for your jobs and will destroy lives due to these people no longer being able to find work. Those that do all of their work typing away at a keyboard all day are the most at risk and those will be the jobs to go first.

Its a very different story for tradies, teachers, nursers, surgeons, lawyers etc..  We are very very far away from AI taking these kinds of jobs.

Regarding climate change, its happening regardless and IMO its hundreds if not thousands of years before it starts destroying mankind. Even then we will get through it.

So its arriving just in time to deal with demographic collapes around the world ?

Office work goes, and they all get retrained as Plumbers, Drainlayers, Hammer-hands, Garbage Collectors, Healthcare, Aged Care, Law enforcement and all the work that has to be done by a person, in person ?

So the limited number of young people is compensated by the need for office work disappearing.
Balance restored to the world.

Paying $500 to $1000 an hour for an AI lawyer, I suppose we will get used to it, and at least they can communicate more easily with the AI Judge.

Sooner or later AI will be running the network…

As for Musk calling for other companies to halt AI training for at least 6 months because of "profound risks to society" - what a load of bullsh!t. He simply wants a chance to play catch up with his own extreme right-wing version of AI.

How about trying to separate the man, and what he says, from those companies products instead of breaking Wheatons law?
