surfisup1000:

Awesome news about being easier to get into Aussie. There don't seem to be any real fish hooks.

I see the flood gates opening for people to leave, at least if people are able to overcome the bonds to family and friends.  Some friends left for NSW several months back, loving it!! Much higher income and a government that treats their people with respect!

Getting into Australia is exactly the same as it always was. This has zero impact on that.

Eva888: I wonder if anything changes for retirees moving to Australia.

Do you mean regarding superannuation? Not much will change. The social security arrangement hasn’t changed.

That won’t change.

Generally, to be eligible for the Age Pension, you must:

be age 66 and 6 months or over, depending on when you were born
be an Australian resident and have lived in Australia for at least 10 years
meet the income and asset tests.

It is possible to transfer KiwiSaver over here though.

The social security agreement means residency in in NZ or Australia both count.

NZ-born and bred, and I'm very keen to make the move to Australia. NZ is moving in the wrong direction in so many ways.

NZ immigrant from 2004 following annual six-month visits from 1998, became a citizen and love it here. I have spent a lot of time in Australia on extended visits and have experienced every state except Tasmania. I appreciate the good things there, which are many, but have no desire to leave NZ. The perfect life is living here and visiting there. I will never understand the need some people seem to have to disparage this country and the institutions that make it work. Of course we have problems
(as do the Aussies!) but this is a great place to live and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Bwahahaha there's literally two funds (First Super and Brighter Super) that accept KiwiSaver transfers unless you work for Telstra, and once it's there you can't consolidate it into your usual fund (because it's ring fenced into funds that support KiwiSaver transfers). It's not like transferring super the other direction.

I would have said the same 2 years ago, unfortunately I was pushed out of NZ as I could not afford it anymore, and wanted to give my kids the best kick start I could into their future. We felt like NZ was going down a dead end, and I had reached the ceiling in my career.

I love NZ too, but the government should have been doing more to keep people like us happy at home. I do dislike the current government very much for their overspending. Arden was more focused it seems on kiwis that had already chosen to leave than kiwis trying to get ahead in NZ. I do now admire her, she did one thing right, she made it impossible for me to get ahead in NZ, but made it possible for me to get ahead in Aus. Well done Arden, 2 years ago I would never have dreamed of leaving, but thanks to you I did, you showed me the light and now I have absolutely no regrets.

Government and New Zealand are two very seperate things. I still love NZ, just because I dislike the government does that mean I disparage the country? NO

I have heard of people doing it, not interested in doing it myself to be honest. I still make the yearly payments into KiwiSaver because I still get the yearly government contribution. So currently probably still better to leave your KiwiSaver in NZ.

This is however, a political decision. But not in the way others have phrased it (imo).

This is all about a decision made by the Albanese Government.

Successive NZ governments, going right back to Helen Clark having to swallow a dead rat when the Australians first announced the current policy, have tried to get a change of heart.

The most telling comment for me in the announcement was the Minister for Home Affairs (Hon Clare O’Neil) that the new policy was “All about reciprocity. So the rights extended to Australians living in New Zealand could be enjoyed by New Zealanders in Australia” (paraphrased). Effectively, now people will get a “fair go”.

Albo potentially has 350K more supporters also. (Minus Ozzies who think it’s the end of the world of course).

You may not get that government contribution going forward though, as you are now working and living outside New Zealand.

https://www.ird.govt.nz/kiwisaver/kiwisaver-individuals/kiwisaver-benefits

Government contribution

If you’re contributing to KiwiSaver, scheme the government will contribute up to $521.43 each year. To get it all you must have contributed at least $1042.86 in the period 1 July to 30 June.

You can get a government contribution if you are aged 18 or over and either:

  • live mainly in New Zealand
  • are a government employee serving outside New Zealand
  • are working overseas as a volunteer, for token payment, or for a charitable organisation named in the Student Loan Act regulations, and the work meets one or more of the requirements set out in the Student Loan Scheme Act 2011.

Yea I’m aware of that. They will probably claw it back when it’s time for me to cash it out. But I doubt they will be clawing back the interest earned off it.
