Sometimes Aucklanders forget the power we use to charge our EVs are generated by burning fossil fuel.

Something like 80-85% of NZs electricity grid is from renewables and increasing over time.

Thanks @dklong @josephhinvest & @johno1234, learning something new everyday.

Reading the em6 portal, it seems all power generation for Auckland is Cogen, am I reading it correctly?  While Northland is all geothermal, I assume that's power generated further South and transmitted through Auckland?

Odds are that all the geothermal we get here in Whangarei (and Northland) is from Ngawha, situated just down the road from the excellent Ngawha Springs and less excellent Ngawha Prison.

IMHO the OP's post is disingenuous, for obvious reasons. A post for the sake of making a post

Bee: Also, why can Formula E cars make a noise and normal road EVs dont?.

Straight cut gears in the transmission vs helical in a road car. Trade off of noise vs strength and efficency.

ResponseMediaNZ:

Was only canned this morning due to flooding and a weather warning and will be on in 2024

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/the-grim-reality-that-made-imolas-f1-weekend-impossible-to-save-/10470580/

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/may/17/emilia-romagna-grand-prix-teams-told-stay-away-imola-flood-alert

Its also a tad hard to race an F1 Car on a flooded circuit. it was also called so the many Emergency services that are needed to run the event could focus on flooding.

IMO

  1. It was canned as racing is dangerous, or it may not be if the circuit can be cleared, which is likely the scenario
  2. It was canned as transport to the circuit is troublesome for the teams
  3. If the populous are dealing with big personal issues its not desirable to have a sports and entertainment event while they suffer

F1 is a huge industry. Bigger than the entertainment value. They chose 3. People are bigger than an event

does anyone know the impact of the sea level rise on New Zealand? be good to see the studies on these. i presume the cold deep south will become warm green pastures (or not!)?

How is this related to the F1 "circus"

Senecio:

Pretty sure it was cancelled out of respect for the people in the local area who have been impacted by the floods and a desire not to place additional demands on the services that are supporting them.

100% which I assumed was obvious, maybe not to the OP

so the Italian GP is cancelled because of flooding

this says is the cause of effects changing climate

yet these rich people are still flying their circus around the world every 2 weeks while we are forced to drive Nissan Leafs

the report is 2019, now they have even more races to fly to

https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/02/22/france-italy-belgium-the-european-regions-most-at-risk-from-floods-and-sea-level-rise

Im struggling to understand what point you are trying to make with this thread. Climate change is important but singling out a natural disaster with biased reports is in quite poor taste.

There are some tragic events unfolding in this region currently.

F1 cancelled the Emilia Romagna GP and the following statement is why;

"The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by the towns and cities in the region. It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time."

F1 is entertainment, people pay to watch and therefore there is a market. If there wasn't money to be made then they wouldnt continue to do it. Im glad they cancelled the last thing this region needs is the F1 circus in the middle of a disaster.

So is this thread about people watching a sport they love? About the poor management of logistics in F1 causing extreme amounts of CO2 or about the tragedy hitting this region of Italy right now. Other than this i think this thread should be locked as its really not appropriate to make light of a situation like what is happening in Italy.

Not sure what the point of this post is to be honest? And I dont think you could ever tempt me to get into a Nissan Leaf, let alone force me into one!

Maybe not the F1 circus but I am sure it will affect the Weber Bros

circuits have to be swept clean for them!

I think you would be glad that airport runways are also kept clear of debris, and you might want to complain if the council does not sweep your streets and fill in potholes.
