mrdrifter:, just coming up to 4 years old,
BDawsNZ:
It should be relevant to the price you pay for them.
But for a $300 chair the surface should last longer than 6 months.
As pointed out in the OP and as discussed in subsequent posts, the chairs are heading for four years old. The covering material started deteriorating about six months ago - so it did last longer than six months.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
@mrdrifter You haven’t said whether you have, or are going to, raise this with Farmers. IMO chairs at that price point should last longer than 3 to 3-1/2 years before the covering starts to fail. Also IMO this is more than just normal wear and tear - the covering is falling apart and that’s unacceptable for their age.
Talk sternly to Farmers about CGA. This should not be seen as a $300 purchase - if you bought, say, six - that’s a $1,800 purchase. Serious money.

IANAL, but isn't it based on the price paid,vs the full retail advertised price that the retailers sells it for. eg If they were normally $300, and they were on sale for $120, then price paid is $120. So then how long should a $120 chair be expected to last for, and would you expect it to last as long as a $300 chair. I had this argument with a retailer once, where i purchased something that had a big discount and it failed, and they brought up this point with me.

@mrdrifter Any progress to report?
I'm hoping to get into Farmers this weekend to discuss it with them. (Work has been non-stop) We just had another one of them snap one of the plastic feet in half tonight, (I forgot about the previous one until now).
Will hopefully be able to update after discussing it with them.
So finally an update.
After contacting farmers via their phone number and then emailing through photos, I was contacted by the local store manager who at first sounded a bit hesitant and asked to give me a call back. Later that day I got a call from the manager saying that the company acknowledged that the chairs should have lasted longer and would we prefer a replacement or refund. They had another style of chair that my SO liked so an order was placed and were offered at their same pricing even though these technically had a small increase in value ~$50 in total due to the original sale pricing of the chairs and current sale pricing etc... These arrived a week later and the delivery guy also collected the old chairs.
One pain point was the bolts were missing on a single chair and one line of stitching on the same chair, it looks to have been a display model, but the store manager has already organised for a replacement to be dispatched.
Overall great service from the local store with good contact and updates directly from the store manager.
