Poor souls, really a horrible situation.

My question is, why isn't the sub tethered to a ship above water? Surely that would be the easiest and simplest way of getting out of issues?

This is all getting very "Timmy down the well" ..

Meanwhile the official death toll from the migrant boat disaster in the Mediterranean reaches 81 with hundreds more expected to be declared dead in coming days,

Eva888: A gleam of hope.

I hope this is true.  Thus far only tabloid and sites with questionable veracity (like the daily mail) are posting this.

kingdragonfly: I heard the sub's hatch is incompatible with standard military rescue sub hatches.

It's not just the hatch, have you looked at the photos of that thing? It looks like an undergraduate engineering student project, I'd be nervous going down 50m (5 ATM) in that thing let alone 3,800m (380 ATM, which from a quick Google is 40MPa, that'll shatter most types of solid concrete).

Yep it looks like a Heath Robinson contraption. Now wondering if it met certification requirements for carrying fee paying passengers.

It didn't, it's an experimental scientific vessel that doesn't require certification.

Probably physics. Sonar has a limited range. Radio waves do not pass through water.

Not true. Low frequency radio waves can penetrate water to an extent and according to this article extremely low frequencies can reach up to 120 metres depth.

They are diving 4km under the water. A tether creates a further hazard of tangling or getting caught on obstructions.

CNN 3 hours ago and our 1 News are also reporting it. Hard to imagine they have enough time to be saved even if located now.

You do realise the Titanic is 3800m down?

Not to mention the data rates are incredibly low and the size of the transmitter and antennas are huge.

If experimental then it shouldn't be allowed to take fare paying passengers. Well, that's how it works in aviation.

For a vessel to be able to charter in NZ it has to meet a well defined set of standards. Same in the USA.

How experimental or safe it was is up for debate.  Clearly the CEO of the tourism company operating it was comfortable enough trusting it with their life as they were the pilot.  I did read something suggesting that everyone had to sign wavers suggesting that there were risks in participating.

Space tourism is the same... I'm certain there will be multiple fatalities at some stage.
