Measured my 5 year old Miracle Casters. About 97-98mm diameter, 56mm wide where it touches the floor. Very slightly different to the listed specs of the current ones, but not sure if they’ve changed or just rounding to nearest quarter inch.

NightStalker:

Best alternative in NZ I have found are the 1x1m carpet tiles from bunnings or mitre10 for around $30.

Absolutely. Had two poly type plastic matts over an eight year period and all cracked and split.
So did what you did and then had them butt together sewn and tape heat sealed together at a carpet Matt place Gate Pa, Tauranga. We live close. Works a treat.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I made my own with a thin piece of MDF and some cheap laminate flooring from Mitre 10. Used contact adhesive to glue them together and cut the shape to fit in the desk. Only negative is that I need to move it if I want to get into the bottom drawer in the desk.

And are those your office assistants there, Ruphus ?

Looks like you make them sleep in the office.

Polycarbonate chair mat is the thing you're looking for. I see one online with a five year warranty $179. Mine was 1/3 that price from Costco. Size might be different.

We have thick carpet, and my last one split. I bought one from here and it's been absolutely brilliant. I spend at least 3 hours a day in the chair that sits on it, many days more than that.

If you want a plastic floor protector which will last,
You need to purchase the correct one for your carpet(pile)
And you will have no problems.

Measure your carpet pile and talk to someone who knows, so you get the right one,
Rather than just buying a random one off the Internet, or a "cheap" one...

I've been through at least half a dozen chair mats in the past ten years, on top of my concrete floor with standard underlay and standard carpet

  • Plastic - cracked quickly
  • Polycarbonate - cracked slightly less quickly than plastic
  • Rubber - left a lot of black marks on the carpet and not rigid enough
  • Rubber over partially cracked plastic - better than plastic by itself

In the end I've taken the carpet up and had carpet tiles put down, which are glued in place. I only had it done a few months ago, but so far so good. This is what they do in commercial buildings, they're meant to last a lot better. What I was told was with carpet the bunching up of carpet and underlay is what causes the problem, so having the layers in the tiles bonded together and glued to the floor makes it last a lot longer than carpet. This works for me as I have a dedicated office which isn't a bedroom or anything, but could look a bit odd in a normal house. A wood overlay like Ruphus did might be the best alternate I've seen.

This is correct. If the spikes on the underside aren't the correct length for your carpet the mat will migrate and/or crack more easily.

The spikes on my one at work are too short, so I have to reposition the mat every week because it moves.

Anyone tried these rubber gym mats? https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/ams-rubber-gym-mat-l-1000mm-w-1000mm-h-15mm-black/p/268286 They are quite a bit more than other options, but I wonder if they will stay rigid or not on plush carpet.

Gym tiles like that are mainly for shock absorption and protecting the floor. They are dense but not rigid or hard, so I don’t think a chair would roll well on them at all.

I tried a rubber chair mat. It left big black marks on the carpet, and wasn't rigid enough for a rolling chair.
