Random topic I know, but surely I can't be the only one with this problem!

My home has somewhat thick carpet, which makes it hard to use office chairs. I bought a plastic mat from PB Tech about a year ago and that worked reasonably well, but it's cracked now...

Before I buy another plastic mat - has anyone had success with using a rug or carpet mat? Or should I look at rubber mats?

You need a better quality floor protector than the one that broke.

I bought mine from Office Products Depot nearly two years ago

and it's knackered

Where would I get a better quality one?

I don't think you can get a better quality one. Get one as cheap as you can find, and just keep swapping them once every couple of years.

I got giant wheels for my chair at home. The chair doesn't get an enormous amount of use as I don't work from home, so I don't know how much they protect the carpet from damage (if at all). But they do make rolling the chair a bit easier.

Next to the wheels they replaced:

Seems like a great idea

How big (diameter) are they? And where did you get them?
My current ones are about 45mm, the biggest I can see to get easily are only 50mm or maybe 60mm

I'm not sure. I bought mine from Costco and I'm impressed so far. Only a year in so far. I don't recall the brand or price. I'll check next time I'm there.

Say 3.75" (95mm). Sounds smaller than I remembered (purchased mine 5 years ago), but I'll try to remember to measure mine when I get home.

EDIT: I call them my Big Boy wheels.

Best alternative in NZ I have found are the 1x1m carpet tiles from bunnings or mitre10 for around $30.

Aliexpress have roller blade type wheels for office chairs. These work great on carpet.

Surprised about the plastic floor protector. Mines about 3 years old and looks great. Think I got it off trademe.

The Better 3/4s used to destroy the carpet in her office when she was working. Plastic runners were a nuisance. The cure was replacing the carpet with tiles and leaving a pile of spares. The tiles almost matched the carpet elsewhere.

That could be taken the wrong way!

There are two types of plastic carpet protector -

One is cheap plastic which is almost able to be rolled up - totally useless.

The other is a really HARD plastic which comes folded in half - resist the urge to try and open it out.

You have to put it outside on a hot, sunny day and allow it to warm up and soften. Then hold up one edge (on a clothesline) and let it open up naturally.

Last for ever.

Be careful with those solid plastic floor mats and moisture. Two staff using these have had mold grown underneath them ruining the carpet in our office at work. The sections and a wide berth around them had to be cut out and replaced.

Two people I know who work from home have used an interlocking product as their chair mats. One an anti-slip kind of rubber mat type product, think it is an exercise mat thing. The other interlocking carpet tiles. Not sure of the brands or exact product, sorry. When I mentioned the mold issue at work, carpet person not worried. The one using the excercise mats cut the corners of the squares to add small holes to allow it to breathe. Both report no issues in the 3 or so years using them.

What about nylon garage carpet that’s sold by meter at Bunnings. The underside is rough and would grip the carpet it is placed on and it has virtually no pile. Would feel nicer than hard plastic.
