Rushmere:

Buy a Numatic Henry.

They’re very simple, old technology, and might cost slightly over $500, but they work and they last for forever.

They’re available here from places like Godfreys, although they’re maybe not so well known in NZ. Back in the UK they’re legendary, and just about every commercial cleaner there uses them because they’re reliable.

Henry / Hetty are great. My wife bought one from the UK, it's probably 15 years old or more, still works great. They cost $530 at the moment, they'll last decades.

They sometimes start to smell after a few years - like most vacuums. Soak the pipes in the bath in floor cleaner or bleach for a year, in summer, then hose them out outside. Give the motor unit a wipe over too.

Can anyone provide the results of the consumer NZ testing on household vacuums?

I hate emptying Dyson bagless stick cleaners, as it's such a palaver.

Really? AFAIAA emptying bagless stick Dysons is an extremely simple thing:

Other models are similarly simple.

And then all that dust will erupt in a cloud all over you and everythign else nearby, so you do it outside and the wind will makesure that it all hits you.

Also it doesnt help with the stuff thats all matted around the top cyclone parts that you have to pick off manually.

Not bagless but our Sebo vacuum has lasted very well.

Super good clean and appreciate the foam surround that protects walls and furniture. We have the Onyx K1 which is their base model and would recommend the next one up.

Handsomedan:

We have one of these: https://sharkclean.co.nz/collections/corded-upright-vacuum-cleaners/products/shark-lift-away-upright

It's been pretty good for the few months we've had it.

It's much better than the far more expensive (but old) Dyson it replaced.

+1 for Shark vacuums

not exactly the same model as above but one of the earlier models and have had it for at least 5 years, suction still very strong even with the dust bin full.

Shark had the power cord replaced free of charge not long after we had it otherwise it's been working flawlessly.

Looking to replace it with another Shark very soon.

Highly recommend it

And the wretched filters get blocked.   I have to regularly clean ours with compressed air, to get a recent run time out of it.

Even with those Miele vacuums when they're nearly full they still pull hard. I was all for bagless but we obtained a Miele and holy crap they're a beast of a thing.

Agree to above as Miele C3 owner.  I was lazy not to have checked the dustbag lately.  Went to have a look and the bag was bulging though the suction was still great.

+1 for Miele. Current workhorse is one of their cheaper ones that is over 15 years old and still does a brilliant job. Prior to that I had my mothers old Miele which by the time I binned it was close to 25-30 yo.

I also initially went for a bagless but as others have pointed out it's almost impossible to empty without getting dust everywhere, and you always have dust and gunk stuck inside it somewhere, while the bagged ones are self-cleaning and self-contained. I got a.... yeah, one of those, you know, the blue ones, about ten years ago and they have a standard line of bags that have been around forever and will probably be around forever.

Also if you use a cyclonic extractor, about $20 off Aliexpress, when vacuuming heavy duty stuff then the bags last forever, I get a set of bags maybe once every two years.

Oh, it's a Nilfisk Coupe Neo, which is still sold today.

Thanks all, looks like I'll grab a Miele, looking online i think either one of these two in the screenshot would be ok? Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? I think the pet one which is more expensive comes with a small turbo head, but the cheaper one comes with two big heads. I don't like the turbo heads on tile floors as the spin like crazy with the lack of friction compared to carpet and flock dirt all over the place. Looks like the cheaper one comes with a second big head which could be better for tiles?

At the risk of hijacking the thread, what are the pros and cons of buying a 'shop-vac' type of thing that can double up as a house vacuum? I'd like something that clean up water spills as well as things like sawdust as well as just vacuuming the house.

I've heard they're quite loud, but this is a non-issue for me.

None, and I got adapters off aliexpress so I can put the spinny brush from my piece of s__t dyson on to the ryobi and get its ability to flick up and loosen carpet dirt that just suction on the ryobi would not get. Still have to go over once with the suction only foot first to pick up the things the spinny brush just flings across the floor like small stones, cat food particles, bread tags, cable tie wires etc.

Got a second-hand Miele C3 Turbo for $150. Just needed a good clean and a new turbo head. Might be worth looking on FB/Trade Me in your area.

Consumer says that the more expensive C3 Cat and Dog is slightly better overall, with a HEPA filter and much better at getting up pet hair, and easier to use.  But it is less good at ordinary carpet cleaning.  This is taken from a comparison of the two on their web site:

C3 Cat and Dog

78 Overall Rating (Recommended)

68 Carpet cleaning

80 Pet-hair removal

84 Ease of use

80 Predicted Reliability

80 Brand Satisfaction

Good points

Good at removing pet hair.

Has HEPA filter.

Good range of tools with on-board storage.

Very easy to install and remove dust bag.

But...

No obvious bad points.
