Rikkitic:

My mother was born on two farms in the 1820s and used to talk of warming her bare feet in blizzard snow while limping to school on one leg across Mt Doom in Mordor!

You forgot to mention that she had to get up at four in the morning to milk the cows, which she had to assemble from twigs and bits of fluff because they were too poor to own any.

There have been a few days this winter when the brief warmth has almost felt welcome. My mother was born on a farm in the 1920s and used to talk of warming her bare feet in fresh cow manure while walking to school in the mornings.

Do you have proof that Rikkitic isn't about 150 years old?

We have a lab cross and she’s great. We got her at 6months old for our son from the SPCA and she’d already been toilet trained which has been a big plus. She does seem to like eating cat poop for some reason so we have to watch her when she finds a “sniff” out on walks.

I take great pleasure in reminding our son of this should she lick his face.

Lab cross has many benefits - one is that her fur is short so doesn’t get dregs. She’s very submissive, plays very well with other dogs even chihuahuas but will turn into a completely different beast when she activates her ridge back in the presence of dodgy people around our house. Doesn’t eat much either - she’ll have two cups a day of dry dog food, supplemented with an occasional dog bone from the pet store freezer and the odd treat from a packet. She’s have to be the first pet I’ve had that doesn’t break into her food bags - they’re right next to her kennel and she just leaves them well alone.

Some other negatives worth mentioning:

- we rented out our first home and made the decision to allow for someone to have a pet dog. So far so good and the tenant was someone who’d had previous good-owner proof. There was no way we’d have cats however. Sux to be in the situation of owning a dog whist renting.

- fences are damn expensive to build when you finally find the perfect home to move to but no fence …

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

We dog sit an 8-month-old springer spaniel.  He is full on but he's a delight.  He still sits on my lap like he did as a puppy.  Only problem is that he is now 25kg, and probably heading for the mid-30s.  I may have made a rod for my own back there.

He's great company on a run, although running with dogs is quite humbling. I'll be running as fast as I can uphill, and he'll be loping happily along beside me, because it's a piece of cake for him.

At 25kg he could already be at top of range for springer spaniels. I don't know about spaniels but labs are much healthier if they don't look like a bag of potatoes.

My two Dobermans, along with the other seven we have owned, eat any s**t they can find except dog. Thats horse/rabbit/possum generally. And they couldn't look healthier.

He's not fat, and the vet is reportedly very happy with his condition.

Both his parents are ~35kg and neither are overweight.  They are effectively farm dogs, very active and fit.

They aren't registered pedigrees, and all three have much a broader frame than a typical lithe springer.  I suspect they're not as pure springer as they look.

True. But far as I'm aware, dogs aren't allowed to roam, but some still do.

We have a 10 yr old black lab....

1 -Nope. Just open the door and boot him outside - he has to run up and down 2 levels of stairs, so hes happy with that ;) He does like walks too tho :)

2 - "Yapping", no, circles, no. He barks very loudly but hes doing his job.

3 - Yup.

4 - Nope

5 - Nope - he snacks more often than I do :D

6 - WT...F :D

7 - Nope - he knows better :D

8 - Umm ok...

9 - No doorbell. All knocks at the door means someone is here to kill us and he barks his loudest regardless if we're right next to the door or not.

10a - Yes - but generally cow crap more than anything (As we found when visiting friends farm)

10b - Nope, he sniffs but does not lick.

Gotta love a dog that charges himself.
