I could never understand why people got rid of their CDs because it usually offers a better quality sound. But there is now a resurgence of people buying physical music, including records. I also noticed that new ars have gotten rid of CD player, and this means older people with CD collections can't play music in their car unless they are more into their tech or use stream services, or pay a subscription for music.  I feel the same with movies, although the quality of DVDs isn't up to the grade of streaming. But unless you have a phycial copy somewhere, and backup if they are digital, then you don't have a copy.

Probably because we all got rid of our CD players and Discman's and moved to iPods and phones.  The death of physical CD media is no mystery to me. I don't think it's comparable to the optical video or game situation at all, but you're right that there is a resurgence of physical music in the marketplace now. I heard as much about cassette tape music recently too.

I don't know if I'm in the minority but I don't miss physical media at all. Especially for books and music. I travel for work so it's lovely having a Kindle.

I have a PlayStation I rarely use so only have a handful of games for it. As for movies my dream would be to have a single repository for all ever made, so I could stream them. However, obviously this has no legal chance.

I once house sat for my sister who had multiple turntables and hundreds if not thousands of LPs.
I listened to one and then had to get up after four songs to turn it over!! No thanks.

I dread the day my parents move. They have a seven foot bookcase the length of the hallway lined with novels.

Last year I decided to sell off my 4K Ultra HD collection of around 100 titles, including many SteelBooks. My plan was to go Digital; I was lured to iTunes because of the excellent pricing, but then I realised that I missed the hands-on experience of physical media and began to regret selling off all but 12 UHD's. I am slowly re-building my 4K collection, and I'm up to 39 titles. I still buy from iTunes as well, but physical media is my preference. When physical inevitably disappears from online retailers, only then will I go 💯 percent digital.

For those who haven't had a look; Check out my two Geekzone threads 4K Ultra HD Release Dates and NZ iTunes Movie Store. I keep them up-to-date with all the latest releases, upgrades and information I can find. 😀

Groucho:

My two cents I prefer physical media when available and will certainly be retaining the DVD, BluRay and CDs I already have.  It's really frustrating when a streaming service has a certain title then it disappears.  Most frustrating is when you are half way through watching a TV series then get the '... is about to leave us'.  Short of pulling some unrealistic binge sessions there's no way you can finish it and no way of finding where it's going if at all.

I've finally got around to building a Raspberry Pi-based Plex server and will eventually media shift my physical content and figure out an easy way to back it up.

I really hope your clients don't need transcoding otherwise you are in for a bad time. A Raspberry Pi will work as a file server ok but it's really not suitable for a Plex server. IMO you really want something that supports hardware transcoding.

I don't use physical media at all anymore and don't miss it.

It's funny, my kids really don't understand disk based media, we haven't gone near tapes yet :)

Love that channel, but still not a fan of physical in my own world.

Digital with physical backup (original media). I don't want to be taken hostage by some honks at some point. Don't let them take your watch away and then tell you what time it is for money. 🙂

I doubt most cars have the kind of audio environment or equipment where you would be able to tell the difference between a CD and a decently ripped lossy audio file anyway. Besides, I banned my wife from having original CDs in the car because they ended up looking like they'd been sandpapered in about a week.

Yep we ended up only ever having burned CDs in the car given they would be destroyed fairly quickly

Been watching his videos since the early days. My first dashcam purchase was based on his reviews.

Being almost a decade older than I am and living somewhere were the was a bigger market for such toys, he got to play with all the technology I wanted to get my hands on as a child... LD, MD, DCC etc. Knowing what I know now, I'm pleased I didn't spend my pocket money on those toys, but I do feel a little envious of his collection.

I would avoid physical media as much as possible. The last thing we need these days is needless extraction, manufacturing, transport and eventual hazardous waste of goods that can exist as digital form...
