...Smallville

While in the DC universe, I guess the 60s "Batman" TV series with Adam West was a spin off from the 40s films, -

Although they all sprung from the comic books, in a similar manner to S Man...

There are some interesting suggestions there.  Smallville and the range of DC shows (can probably Gotham and Pennyworth as well) probably owe more to their comic book origins than the movies that preceded them, especially when there have been multiple movies and stories told.

I guess why I find this an interesting question to ponder is how common it was (or seemed, at least) for movies to spawn a spinoff show (either remake or sequel), but the modern batch of movies less so.  Perhaps another consequence of the "remake" phenomenon where Hollywood seems more interested in remaking existing films than making new stories...

Reflecting on the examples I gave, I remember raising an eyebrow when it was announced that Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) was going to be the star of a new show based on the Stargate movie, and then being pleasantly surprised how good it was.  And similarly for Buffy - based on an almost laughable movie - how solid the storytelling was (for the time, at least) and how much world-building the did from a fairly flimsy premise.  Amidst the glut of new shows, I guess I found it curious that there weren't many comparable examples from the last 10 years (aside from the ones you have all shared).

I would discount anything that didn't start off as an original movie IP.

So that rules out anything Marvel, DC, Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan etc... Is the tv series from the movie or from the books or other media it originated from? For example, Smallville is not from the Superman movies.

Stargate SG1 is from the Stargate movie so qualifies.

MASH is from the movie - again qualifies

As I was driving to work this morning, a random thought popped into my head - is there a better TV show spinoff from a movie than Stargate SG-1?  This got me to thinking about other TV shows which have spun-off from their movie sources - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, M*A*S*H - and I began to wonder if there are any others which are worthy of watching?  Or has the phenomenon of spinning off TV shows from movies gone the way of the dodo?  I know Marvel have a large slate of TV shows that feature characters from their movies, but when you compare them to the ones I've mentioned, they would struggle to match the cultural impact and endurance (M*A*S*H ran for 11 years).

 

So - what do you consider the be the best TV spinoffs from a movie?

 

Ha. Saw the thread title and immediately thought SG-1.

The first couple of seasons of Lethal Weapon was a pretty good spin off from the movie

M*A*S*H - 1970 movie >>>>> M*A*S*H - 1972 - 1983 TV series 

This was an absolutely fantastic movie and then TV series 8/10 - 9/10

The Doc Martin TV series is interesting in that the character first appeared in the move "Saving Grace (2000)" as "Dr Martin Bamford", which lead to two made for TV movies: "Doc Martin (2001)" and "Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie (2003)". The character then underwent a change of name to "Dr Martin Ellingham", together with a change of personality, to appear in the long running TV series "Doc Martin" in ten series between 2004 and 2022.

When we were in the UK in 2018 we visited Port Isaac, where the series is set, while in Cornwall. The seafront area of the village is as cute and the roads as narrow as they appeared n the TV series.
