Thankfully my wife was with her and as she deals with AML every day she was able to question why. Verifying age we have no problem with but their answers to why do you need it, where will it be stored and how long for were simply "it's our policy", "on our app" and "I don't know".

They settled on accepting her student ID but my wife walked away as she wasn't prepared to hand over her drivers licence, so it clearly wasn't an age issue.

The consent form was all based in their app, on an ipad, and was pages long, so who knows how secure it is.

When it happened to me (at a hotel and car dealership) they both quickly apologised and agreed it wasn't necessary.

My wife decided to phone around a few other places and was told by one they need require it and they wrote it on a piece of paper and sent it to head office !

No. I've had a bank ask me to e-mail them updated copies of my ID. Naturally, I refused. If the organisations which are required by law to validate your ID can't do so securely, there is no way I would trust a random business with copies.

How else can you prove to Blizzard that the account in question is yours? Whats the difference between taking a photo and photocopy it?

Make up a fake one for use with nosey business.  Just like disposable emails and social media accounts. A fake ID can be handy.

My employer wanted to copy my drivers licence , for their insurance purposes for company cars that I rarely drive.
I now regret allowing them to do so.
I dont know their storage of my copied lecence ID is secure . We all know how insecure NAS open the the internet can be (I dont know if they use a VPN)

It will turn into an argument , and your employer will see you as being difficult & paranoid if you refuse (from experience) .

Add to that, the promise , by the Govt of the time, that the Drivers lic will NOT be used as a default ID (when they went to drivers lic with a photo)  :-(

If the piercing shop ever had to justify themselves I think they'd need more proof than a tick that they'd sighted the parent's id. The NZTA starting point is don't give your license details out unless you're satisfied it's for a legitimate purpose. They don't say never.

If they had a form which recorded the name of the person giving consent and the type of ID presented that would be a sufficient paper trail to prove they had taken reasonable care.

The Crimes Act views forgery as a crime punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

It's an incredibly stupid thing to suggest.

This article seems relevant. You can ask under the privacy act for the details of the information they hold about you and ask that they delete/purge the information they are not supposed to retain. If you don't trust your employer, you should probably not still be working for them?

Quick update to say the business in question have been absolutely superb in their response.

Both the store manager and CEO (or whatever) have been in touch to say it was an error on their part, they accept they do not need to retain information and have notified staff to not take photos whilst they update the app.

Their communication all around has been excellent, so well done them.
