I didn't stop going because of expense, I stopped because cinemas put no effort into being comfortable, being clean, moderating other customers, upgrading equipment, so on and so on.

We have some new cinemas now, the facilities are great, the equipment is top notch.  But now the price is as much of an issue as the previous considerations, and it's too late for me to want to go back other than to see some tentpoles once or twice a year.

I just prefer my home setup now too.  It's not the same for visual scale (unless I use my headset), but the audio is great.  There are trade-offs, but they all become worth it the moment the guy in the row in front of me at Queensgate starts using his phone, and the woman in the seat next to me starts eating her popcorn like it's out of a trough.

i think I might still go to the movies but probably not this year as there is nothing in the upcoming slate that interests me. But if I do it will be a Tuesday at Queensgate where it will be $26.15 with their Cinebuzz discount

Last year I was discounted a total of $98 at Event Cinemas by using my AA membership. The best saving was for the IMAX viewing of Oppenheimer. Definitely saved a few bucks on that one.

I almost broke even with the $120 AA membership cost! In my opinion, the AA membership discounts aren't bad bang for buck. A lot of places offer discounts for it, and the roadside assist is a nice bonus.

AIA Vitality membership gets you half price Hoyts and discounted Event too.

Entertainment Book also gets you cheap Hoyts and Event tickets.

Most movies are available on digital so quickly after their theatrical release that it just isn't worth spending that much, especially as TVs are getting bigger and bigger. It's not like the old days where if you didn't see it in the theatre you'd be waiting close to a year to watch a cropped VHS on a 21" TV.

I never go the theatre anymore.

The theatre here by us is packed with youngsters on the weekend, tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for kids. I believe student ID gets you a discount too.

Wife and I have been a few times and always have a good experience though we do prefer the drive-in cinema.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

While I am pretty happy with my HT setup (100" HD screen Dolby Atmos 4.1.2 I could never replicate what I experienced at the theatre. But it would take a pretty spetacular movie to get me out again.

Compare that to the quality of some of the movies and TV series that are being produced from the top streaming platforms and people are voting with their feet. Add in that the content is delivered to your lounge room whenever you want it and cinemas really haven't got a chance.

I think this is partly what made video shops go the way of the dinosaur too - why go to the hassle of visiting the video shop when you can just stream it in similar (if not better) quality at home, without even leaving the house?

For my part, the last time I went to the movies it was last year when I saw Oppenheimer at some theatre in Petone (can't remember the name). I paid for the food and my stepbrother shouted me the tickets. I think he had a discount but even then I was surprised how expensive it was - and it wasn't exactly like the theatre was packed either, there were still plenty of seats.

ticket price doesnt bother me tbh.  the food cost is crazy though.  $10+ for popcorn that costs them cents to make.   m&ms are around $10 for a bag you can get from the supermarket for $3.50.

but having said that, who walks up to the counter and buys tickets these days? book online, pick your seats.   so much easier.  reminds me of people who order pizza at the counter for pizza hut....

From memory I saw my movie on a Sunday night, so there were plenty of seats to go around, hence he was able to book them at the theatre.

I agree with your comment re the food, etc however - I suspect that's where they make most of their money from.

I got my food from the The Warehouse at Queensgate. As for buying tickets online, since I knew the theatre was pretty empty I saved myself the online booking fee and bought the tickets from the kiosks. As an aside, I wonder if the T&C's of the ticket allow you to bring in your own food

I just realised AA members get discounts at Event Cinemas. $16 adult tickets, $15 off peak adult tickets, $13 child off-peak tickets (oddly no child peak tickets), plus combos for seniors. There's also 20 minutes free play at Timezone, which has arcades in a few places - but not in Wellington. There's a few useful benefits. I've been a member for years and didn't realise.

I sort of go in clumps with the movies. I might go six months without see one, then see four in two weeks. I love it really, yes there are all the annoyances but I often get to go midweek, in small towns so I'm often the only one in there.
I don't think home can top it. To easy to pause, check my phone etc. When I'm at the movies I have to concentrate and I guess that's a part I enjoy. The Dunes were impressive at the cinema up there with Bladerunner 2040, it felt like I was there.

I should look up my local, I always felt they were really reasonable.

Not IMAX but Monterey Upper Hutt is good value

Yeah +1 for my local.

I go there unless it’s something I want to see in IMAX (eg Dune 2 - although I did see it a second time at Monterey)

Monterey have recently put their prices up but you can sign up for their members club and get a few dollars off the ticket price. Either way it’s still cheaper than Event most of the time. I think they have changed owners recently as they have upped their game. I’m happy to buy exorbitant priced popcorn to support a small local cinema. I’d watch far less movies if there wasn’t a cinema in Upper Hutt.

I figure use or we will lose it, they had the Star Wars movies which were great as well. There are new owners hopefully they can keep it a float
