Forgot to add I live in Auckland on the North Shore specifically.

Also I did the clay pigeon shoot at Carodale Estate and struggled with the target tracking and the guy who runs the place said I'd be more suited to rifle shooting and I'm inclined to agree with him because I've shot my air rifle and my crossbow I purchased last Christmas more times than I have a shotgun at a moving target.

learn to shoot shotgun. you still use the same techniques with rifles and makes you a whole lot better.

You make a very good point.

Also I found it a bit demeaning having to put that I'm on the Autistic Spectrum under "Mental Illness" on the online licence application because being on the Autistic Spectrum isn't classified as being a Mental Illness in a lot of countries now.

There's a lot of good information on this topic online, specifically with regard to identifying not only your dominant hand, but also your dominant eye - which may not necessarily be the same side as your hand eg right hand and left eye dominant. This matters because it's a hand/eye coordination sport so if you're unknowingly using your weaker eye to aim, you'll miss more times than you hit.

If you want to know more, check out these videos from Steve Gould in the USA:

Eye Dominance in Shotgun Shooting

Should you shoot with both eyes open?

Beginners also tend to focus on the end of the barrel when aiming but you need to focus on what you want to hit. A good analogy is that you don't focus your eyes on your steering wheel or the front of your car when driving - you focus on where you want the car to go and your arms do the rest without needing to look down at them. The principle is much the same in shooting.

Following with interest to see if/how this impacts your application.

I've summitted my online application and I'm currently waiting to be assigned my unique code for booking the Firearms Safety Course. Does anyone know how long it normally takes to be assigned a code? As I submitted it last Tuesday night and I hope I get the code soon so I can book one of a 12 remaining  slots  for the course that will be help on the 14th of September at the Masonic Lodge in Orewa as that would work best for me.

Also is the code emailed to you or sent via 🐌📬

It shouldn't take too long to get the code to book. It's emailed to you.

Looks like there's only one space left in Orewa next month. If you haven't already managed to get booked on it's worth flicking an email across to firearms@mountainsafety.org.nz to see whats happening and if they can book you on.

Turnaround times have improved hugely lately and it is taking about 4-6 weeks on average based on discussions I've had with people.

I rang the Te Tari Pūreke number and the lady who answered my call said the code is assigned within a month as they're getting through a bit of a backlog of renewals and I've missed next months Orewa and Pukekohe courses.

Actually now that I think of it is it possible they might be able to squeeze me in to the Pukekohe course on the 21st of September if I get my code this week or next week and I ask nicely via email?

I got my booking ID on Monday and I've booked the 12th of October course at the Orewa Masonic Lodge and I sent the email with my booking ID,date and location of the course and the booking reference.

So how fast should I expect things to move assuming I pass the course?

Because I've read some people have been called to arrange the security inspection and interview a week after doing the course.

Good stuff.

You should look at getting all of your security arrangements etc in place before you go on the course.
The guides online are pretty good. As others have said, don't do the bare minimum. Get a real safe and secure it properly.

Doing that this weekend and because I don't want to wrangle a 100+ kg safe I'll get a lighter one and anchor it to the concrete garage floor with 4x M16 Dynabolts with M12 threaded bolts and put another stud in and use 3x M10 Coach Screws for the wall anchor. So I ordered a $129 1500w SDS Plus Rotary Hammer Drill from Trade Tested and a 16mm SDS Plus Masonry Drill Bit and a 1/2" shank 16mm High Speed Steel Drill Bit from NZ Safey Blackwoods.

So I've spent $230+ so far to install the safe.

I successfully completed the Firearms Safey Course and Te Tari Pūreke sent me an update email last Tuesday congratulating me on successfully completing the course and to say they're forwarding my case file to the Waitamata/North Shore Arms Office as that's the region I live in.

So allowing a week for the physical file to go from Wellington to the North Shore Police Station at Parkway Drive  via 🐌 📬 when could I reasonably expect to get a call from the local Arms Officer as it's a week today?

Well the Vetting Interviews for my related person referee, my interview and the Security Inspection is set for Monday 9th December and my non-related referee interview is happening Wednesday 4th December and the Whangarei Arms/Vetting Officer will do that as my non-related referee lives at Marsden Point.

Te Tari Pureke doesn't muck around because I got the email from them asking me to book a date and time on Monday right as my smoko break at work started and they said my non-related referee would be contacted shortly and I assumed a day or so but no he got contacted the same day to arrange his interview. So if the Local Vetting Officer is satisfied by the interviews and the security arrangements it's normally approved the same week and you're told to allow up to two weeks for the physical licence card to be printed and delivered via mail so I might get it the week after Christmas Day and then it's off to the local Police Station to get my MyFirearms Complete Your Profile signed off and validated.

Well the related person interview, my interview and the security/storage inspection has happened and the Vetting Officer was happy with everything and he didn't really ask much about my Autistic Spectrum diagnosis and he passed me on the security/storage inspection and didn't have any further recommendations to increase security and he actually complimented me saying" your security is a lot better organized than a lot of people he'd interviewed and security inspected". So hopefully I'll hear from Te Tari Pureke as to the outcome next week.
