old3eyes: RNZ = Red Radio. Always pushing the left agenda.

How about actual evidence to support such a spurious claim?* What exactly is the ‘left agenda’, anyway? And how does RNZ ‘push’ this?

While there’s no doubt that more fringe media like Reality Check and The Platform wear their biases (and craziness) on their collective sleeves, throwing this kind of term around in relation to RNZ is more part of the wider pushback against media that dares to reflect the pluralistic reality of our contemporary society. This doesn’t seem to go down well with those who liked NZ ‘how it used to be’…

* And please don’t reference the RNZ sub-editing debacle as evidence; that was clearly a case of cock-up over conspiracy.

For those of you complaining, are you paying a subscription fee or are you expecting a quality product for free?

Obviously no sub with TVNZ but I’m entitled to be unhappy because they’re using my taxpayer’s money to provide a crap and biased service.

Umm, actually isn’t it that money normally (previously) flows the other way? Ie, payouts from TVNZ as an SOE to the govt, when there has been an operating surplus? I don’t believe ‘tax payers’ money’ goes to TVNZ (other than contestable funding through NZ On Air etc, but that’s also available to fully private networks as well).

If you don't like the news outlets you're using then find better ones. I find RNZ and Newsroom really good.

What would your recommendation be?

No they're not. TVNZ is a commercial broadcaster.

RNZ is a public service broadcaster, so you have the right to expect high standards from them as a taxpayer.

Fair point - I stand corrected.

I get my NZ news from the Guardian.  A small number of well-written, relevant stories rather than a mass of churned-out clickbait and social-media-style gunk.

johno1234: There are really no words for how bad TV1 news is these days.

A lead item this evening, which went on and on, was their own commissioned poll on whether Chris Luxon is “in touch” and whether Chris Hipkins should stay as Labour leader. Other stuff such as some terrible traffic accidents and Gaza were left to a brief afterthought in a later segment.

A stupid poll is not news and the way Maiki Sherman went on and on presenting her opinions as fact were pure cringe.

that's good to know. i haven't watched TV news for over a year now. maybe more. i didn't find they added any value even back then.

Is it just me or is the majority of the 6pm bulletin pre-recorded now?

Broadcast TV news bulletins are only a summary of the day's news and generally not happening live at 6pm.  Media releases, Government announcements etc.. are all released well ahead of 6pm to give the broadcasters time to put a package together.

The 6pm news on tv channel “1” in any country should be expected to provide quality.

I mean when Simon is presenting it's now obvious a lot of it is pre-recorded because it cuts from him standing in front of the screen to sitting down at the desk.

So you would expect that people would be better served with it being released during the day on some form of interactive thing where people can choose the stories that are of interest to them, rather than being delayed until 6pm and played out in an arbitrary order. Something like a 1 news website. No chance that anyone would think of shutting that down inorder to save money, is there?

Who should pay for it? Advertisers certainly won't.

Should the government be funding it?
