Whenever someone uses 'ect' instead of 'etc.', it always brings to mind Electroconvulsive Therapy for me.

I suspect a marketing department came up with it. "Let's make it so that they actually need to click the link and see all the ads in order to work out what we're talking about". I suppose the real tragedy is that people not in marketing roles are using it.

On a different forum I was pounced on for saying "Mac Mini": Apple writes it "Mac mini". It made me wonder wherther that person worked for Apple's marketing department.

So this is a "Grammar Spelling and Pronunciation Thread" — does that mean it's a thread to discuss the spelling and pronunciation of "grammar"?

Should be a short thread if so!!

My grammar died in 2010, RIP, she lived to be nearly 93. She was a wonderful woman who could do no wrong in my eyes.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

A lot of people (yes here on GZ) want "advise".

I advise them to get some advice on how these words should be used.

Oh - and "would of" is not a thing.

Sure "would've" might sound like the above - but its short for "would have" - just saying....

I mentioned a "new series" of something the other day and was looked at like I was mad. "Do you mean a new season?" No, I don't, it's a TV programme, not weather!

alasta:

My biggest irritation is the misuse of there/their/they're and you're/your. The latter is very prevalent on this forum and I really struggle to understand how people confuse the meaning of those two synonyms.

Ugh, or loose/lose.

But English has its own built-in fails. For example, something you can believe is credible, whereas something you cannot is incredible. Someone who could get things wrong is fallible, whereas someone who is always right is infallible. Something that burns is flammable, whereas something that burns is inflammable.
