The price you pay for cheese has more to do with supermaket chains and their wholesaling companies than Fonterra and what Fonterra pays to its suppliers for their milk.

A couple of years ago now Fonterra was getting around $5/kg yet cheese was selling for up to $18/kg.

Mainland, No Frills, Valuemetric, and other brands packed by Fonterra factories are all packed from the same cheese. The only difference is the premium brands like Mainland Tasty Ceddar are packed from aged cheese.

The higher the price of Dairy, the better off NZ will be.

Is that what they call trickle down dairy?

Lias: Cheese has been $8.99/kg at the local Pak n Save for a very long time.

I'm not seeing that at all. Went to two PaknSaves recently and saw nothing below $13.50/kg as is frequent. I did not buy that day.

PaknSave online with the same stores selected I see both "Pam's" brand and "Eclipse" brand both at $10.29/kg.

Either that was a temporary stock outage, or I missed it, or I should start shopping online. I'm thinking next time I'll pull the phone out and ask if need be.

I just bought a no-brand "everyday cheese" 1KG block from Woolworths and paid $11.50.

I think you can get flavourless cheese in the same brand for $10.90 per KG

The home/own brands change manufacturer every now and then over time, currently Woolworths Tasty is Fonterra/Mainland Tasty but I don't believe Pams is.

For cheese it’s called melt down dairy.
