For my daughter (12) I thought I'd get her a knitting kit. I was surprised to find that there wasn't really anyone selling kits that included some beginner needles, suitable yarn in a variety of colours an some patterns and tutorials.

I will end up going to a knitting store and just buying stuff manually like a peasant.

I was also thinking about buying a whole bunch of matchsticks (with the ignitor off) and seeing if my kids were interested in trying to build something with pvc glue.

I was also given a roughly shaped bone in the shape of a hook and some sandpaper to make a necklace, not sure where I'd even start to find something suitable.

Beginner's knitting kit. *

Spotlight - matchsticks.

(PVC glue is for welding plastic pipes etc - PVA is better for wood and paper. 😀)

*Edit: Just realised that they have several other knitting kits.

Consider crochet instead of knitting. It’s easier as just one hook rather than two needles and no frustration of dropping stitches. Library has lots of how to books on it, also lots of videos on you tube for beginners. She can make granny squares for a blanket for babies or the disadvantaged. It’s easier to learn and knits up faster so they don’t get bored with it. My granddaughter really enjoys it. Don’t get bamboo hooks, get aluminium. Trade me has crochet hook sets in a case.

Thanks. I have never tried crochet, my mother was a knitter and so my sister and I also knitted quite a lot as kids. We used to make heaps of these little cute lambs and deliver them to hospitals and sick people in our area.

Mrs Code is an avid knitter and some of what she makes is as part of a local group who knit tiny baby clothes and beanies for prem babies in hospitals - look like dolls' clothes. There's a charity that coordinates it.

Kids get absolutely spoilt by uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. so we won't get anything for them, it would just get lost in the flood of presents at their current ages. And we have to find somewhere to store all this crap too. And then repair it as the cheap crap from Temu inevitably breaks within the first two days.

Wife and are I not planning on buying gifts to each other due to financial constraints, but I did see a vase that (I hope) she'll love at the local op shop for $5 so got that for her.

MadEngineer: My sister is wanting ideas on what to get my son for Christmas.
What’s everyone buying?

We have always bought useful essentials and accessories during the year to store them for birthdays and Christmas: merino socks, briefs/boxers, hats, gloves, singlets/t-shirts, and so on. Socks can be used as Christmas stockings so no wrapping required.

From a young age our sons and, more latterly, our son-in-laws are thankful for any assistance to avoid shopping themselves.

Something practical that is never around when you need them - small packs of Band Aids...

Should raise a few laughs...

The list is quite short: mainly things that you can't buy for money.

And the things that can be bought were always available exactly when they were really needed. 🙂

No gifts to give humans on my side, my teenage cat just got a catio as an early birthday/Christmas pressie and she'll be given her cat kickers I got from BlackFur Studios (thanks @michaelmurfy).

I'll probably gift myself a few bits and pieces but won't be until Boxing Day. Need a better vacuum and have been procrastinating so could be a good time for it 😅

We also have one with a different motif, originally from the 60s. We call it „retro tray for TV canapés.“ 😄

You can do gift in = gift out.  For each toy or whatever that they are given they must put an old toy into a box for donating/disposing.
