ANglEAUT:

pdh: ... IMO, the best source of international news - with minimal bias - is the Singapore Straits Times. ...

How far left or right is Al-Jazeera?

Depends on what Qatar's policy is...

Media restrictions in the Gulf are quite strong, both in a blatant and a tacit way... Don't expect anything out of that region to be free from political influence

dafman: Associated Press (apnews.com) have good neutral and unbiased articles.

The problem with the Big Four (AP, AFP, UPI, and Reuters) is that they're just-the-facts reporting.  This makes them very neutral, but in a lot of stories you need at least some analysis to know what's going on.  This is why Ad Fontes rate their sources in two dimensions rather than just left and right.

Been tempted to pay for Ground News (annual subs are 10 or 30 or 60 $US).
Probably will when I'm over the current spending freeze ;-)

I have a ground.news sub- cost $10.00 $US each year for the Pro subscription. This really is good as it shows the slant of the reporting, really fun to read the same story from both sides and how facts get spun.

Some 50 years ago I worked for a year in the UK at a technical job, and realised that it was not the newspapers that people read that formed thier opinions, but the newspapers they refused to read. Even then "class echo chambers" were obvious to an "outsider"

Asteros:

If you are interested to read The Economist and in the Auckland region, Auckland Libraries offers free access.

Wellington do the same,

You can access it digitally via pressreader with your library card ... and its quite pleasant to read on a tablet

TBH, I think it’s a really wide range of NZ libraries, including small/provincial libraries, that offer it - and many, many other titles - via PressReader.

Aren’t libraries the best?! Whoever said libraries have little relevance in the 21st century have it so wrong…

Def worth signing up for, You're paying for in your ( ever increasing) rates bills, so you might as well take advantage of it....

I once subscribed to The Economist - very easy!

I once tried to unsubscribe from the The Economist - virtually impossible!

PressReader user here.  Agree with above. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of magazines available, that would have cost me a lot if I were to subscribe to ones that I read on a daily basis.

One local rag available on Press Reader is the NZ Herald (and their weekend titles). While I know the Herald gets a lot of dissing here on GZ, personally I think the ‘physical’ newspaper is a far more interesting read, with not nearly as much filler, compared to the Herald’s website (well, especially for those of us without a digital sub as the best stuff is behind their paywall).

At the least it’s good for their five-minute quiz!

The Dom Post also used to be on PR, but they took it off a couple of years back.

Oh, the NZ Listener’s also on there…

Thanks to all for the responses. I particularly like the Press Reader idea for The Economist - I’ll look into that with Auck Libraries.

I’m sure it will have the sort of thing I’m looking for.

Success - very happy with this.
