I was flying into Brisbane tomorrow 9AM. Delayed to Sunday 9am. Hopefully, it's sorted by then, or at least safe.

I'd be keen for on the ground updates so if you could regularly go outside and give a weather report ala TV, that would be super appreciated :)

You should be able to get the news from ABC stream. I don't think it is geoblocked.

God there are so many dumb people. It's hard not to wish them ill.

Honestly, I don't give a crap about people taking those risks, they are taking them, it's the people who need to needlessly risk their own lives to save them when they get into trouble, taking away resources from people who need help through no fault of their own.

Whilst saying that, I understand the urge to be able to see the power in person. Videos and pictures can't adequately convey the incredible power of these events.

It's asking to install some Google DRM, I think YT streams would be a better source.

Flickering lights here in Surfers now. I think it's probably only a matter of time before the power goes off...

Wind and rain have certainly picked up. Could be a long night without much sleep.

It's been a very windy night. We are on level 11 of a 30 story building and can feel a shudder from some of the stronger gusts. Probably feel more when it arrives at 4am Saturday(7amNZ).

Interesting. While I'm certainly not in an ideal location (such as back at home, away from the storm!) it seems that we didn't pick too badly. I'm on the north side of the building, on the 9th floor, and I didn't notice anything unusual about last night.

I can definitely hear it tonight though!

Some officials are already unhappy at the dumb people: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/cyclone-alfred-sparks-evacuations-power-outages-in-australia/QRWEDZYVRJEXRN3ARCSIMIAU6I/

Despite the threat of $16,000 fines, some people are still accessing closed beaches on the Gold Coast. Several people have had to be rescued from areas recording 10-metre swells, despite the beaches being closed.

"[It's] just stupidity, people are trying to get on the beach - trying a cheap thrill...  they're putting themselves in danger,” President of Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club Paul Mann told the ABC.

Had that happen at my place on Tuesday! Never got back to sleep :(

The cyclone has been downgraded to a low, so I can now officially say that I survived it!

Back home in Christchurch after an interesting couple of weeks on holiday.

Gold Coast beaches got a bit of a hammering, but the council was out a couple of days after the storm with excavators reshaping them. Probably looking all good by now.

Noticed quite a few trees down and heaps of branches etc on the ground. Didn't take the locals long to get back to normal.

Flew down to Sydney a few days later and straight into a heat wave, 36C.

It sounds like you at least got some holiday out of it. I'd only gone for a week, and most of that ended up being spent inside watching daytime TV. I got all the extra costs paid out by insurance, but if only there was a way for them to refund my wasted annual leave...

That's a shame your holiday was ruined. Aussie daytime TV is as bad as ours.

Have you never heard of ABC or SBS? Aussie daytime TV is infinitely better than ours.
