I did a search on Jaycar financials.

A snip of what I found:

Jaycar Electronics is a Proprietary Company that generates the majority of its income from the Computer and Computer Peripheral Wholesaling industry.

In 2024 the company generated total revenue of $341,821,000 including sales and other revenue.

Yep. Could not find a figure for profit however.

Their staff are stuck on minimum wage. Margins are huge.

Another thing about Jaycar is that you usually get what's advertised (with the exception of some CCS cabling where they got scammed by the supplier).  For example I needed a bunch of PG9s and got them from a cheapish NZ source, they turned out to be complete garbage, the grommets were plastic not rubber and wouldn't come close to sealing.  Got the way overpriced Jaycar ones and they were the real deal.

There is also the electus distribution side which is more wholesale.

They have also recently opened a Riccarton branch on Blenheim Road, Christchurch.

Pretty unlikely that they would go to the expense of having a third branch in Christchurch if they weren't making money.

I usually walk to the Papanui branch when I want something.

They remind me so much of the old David Reid and Dick Smith stores.

Lots of stuff I have no idea what I would ever have a use for, but also fun things and good old fashioned electrical spares.

What you describe above about Dick Smith is when they were a successful store. It's only when they tried to be like every other appliance / electronic goods store that everything went downhill.

The dick smith failure is a bit of a special case. Has been described as the Greatest Private Equity Heist of all time. Anchorage Capital turned $10m into $520m in less than two years. Once the exited, all the window dressing faded away, leaving a broken business.

And not to mention the dubious recording of rebates to inflate the profit.

I remember walking into the closing down store sales and seeing walls of old iphone case, cables, and tons of HDMI cables - I heard once they had 10 years worth of stock (as if anyone would be buying an iphone 4 phone cover 10 years later).

If you want it today, Jaycar. If you don’t mind waiting 3 weeks and then maybe getting something that’s not what you ordered then AE.

Their markup seems quite high on components and electronic bits, but you can get it today and someone will often help you work out find what you need. I find them quite useful.

What I think you will find is the general change of "Retail" business.

Since COVID people learned to shop online. And as a result shopper habits have changed.

Have you seen how business like the warehouse performed just prior to COVID, turning decent profits, now they are struggling and shutting down stores and laying staff off. Yes there are still many people who prefer to shop in stores. And some stores do better than others. For example I choose to purchase clothes and shoes at stores still, to determine if I like the "fit". But if I want to purchase some electronics or general goods, sometimes ordering it online and having it delivered is easier.

I go in sometimes to get some printer supplies when I am slack and run out to the glenfield one. Other than the little clearance table nothing there is worth buying IMO, unless you need it that day.

For aliexpress like stuff but faster there is epartners on trademe or now they have their own site. HDMI cables and stuff are way cheaper at PB than jaycar.

Got some hookup wire from Jaycar and it was ok, but so is the stuff I have bought off aliexpress in the past.

That's the problem with Aliexpress, if it's something very cheap and where I'll potentially need more than one at some point anyway I often order items from several vendors in the hope that one of them is as expected, so I don't have to go through iterations of 3-week waits to correct problems.

But then you have all the other things and you have to have a system to recall where they are for when you need another one.
