If he had died at 40, or been prematurely extinguished by Italian traffic, I might feel a kind of general sadness but he lived to the very respectable age of 88, had a full and fulfilling life, and died a much loved and highly regarded world figure. What is there to feel sad about? People should be dancing in the streets in celebration of a life well lived!

He's still gone and that's a loss to many. You can celebrate and mourn the loss at the same time. The flag at half mast is a recognition of the loss.

So does anyone else agree we're well past time for another female Pope?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Joan

And yes I'm very serious.

Sure just pick from one of the female cardinals…

You don't need to be a cardinal or a priest. Sure, it is likely not happening, but it's not a rule.

Really not sure flags should be getting flown at half mast in NZ.

Seems less than 300,000 people identify as Catholic, and border line a separation of "church and state" issue.

Couldn't disagree more. It's a fitting and minor recognition. Even those who aren't Catholic might feel sadness at his death.

I'm not sure it needs to be flown half-mast but the Pope was not only the leader of the Catholic church, he was also the Vatican Head of State.

I've been reading a few articles concerning contenders for the post. Any baptised Catholic male is eligible, though only cardinals have been selected since 1378. Now, contenders must be 80 or younger. What I find hypocritical is that most of the top contenders are in their late 70s and bang on 80. Then, when you look at the younger ones that are in their 60s, they are apparently too young as the College of Cardinals do not want a Pope to hang around too long and make too many changes. Whilst the ones in their early 70s have a black mark against them.

Devine intervention apparently is how it is done.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

It's not contenders but voters. The Cardinals must be under 80 to have a vote. They could vote for somebody older but unlikely.

Was Pope John Paul I cut short at 33 days by Divine intervention or heart attack?

Any baptised Catholic male is technically eligible but there hasn't been a non cardinal example since 1378 so it is an unwritten rule.

As stated above I'll feel some degree of happiness when there is a female pope.

Catholic church has caused so much damage in NZ and the Pacific I can't feel any sadness about this event.

I don't understand how having a female in charge would magically fix those things? Surely it's a about a persons values and will, rather than their gender?

I think this reinforces why any new pope needs to be under 60 when they start and they should then retire when they no longer think they are up to it, like the previous pope did when he was still in reasonably ok health (who ironically became the longest living pope ever).

Did Pope Francis actually achieve anything?

Yes, but don't take my word for it, have a read up online. He was quite unpopular for his left leaning policies

Now let's see how accurate the movie The Conclave was.

According to Roman Catholic theology, the Holy Father (note: holy at lifetime!) or Pontifex Maximus (Pope) is ‘the representative of God on earth’. This makes it very easy to ‘check’ your faith.
