We have both a Dyson v8 and a Meile c3.  The Dyson gets more out of the carpet than the Meile.

We use the Dyson almost exclusively, the one thing that it does suck at (and not in a good way) is sucking up larger objects on wooden floors (i.e dried peas, twigs, etc)

To get around the poor battery life we use a rechargeable battery, you can get adaptor kits off trademe/temu.  The Ozito 4AH ones last at least half an hour.

I bought a Dyson Outsize (V13? Absolute?  Can't remember...) about 4 years ago.  The things I like - it's nice to have it on the charge and it's easy to just pick up and go without having to faff about with cords and winding them back into a corded vacuum cleaner.  The size of the bin is okay and I find it easy enough to empty, though in my new, larger house with fluffier carpets it's filling up faster.  Things I don't like - the main head seems befuddled by anything more than fine dust on hard floors, and you end up just chasing it round the kitchen; it won't go under the head and get sucked up.  I also find it quite heavy to use for more than a few mins (and I'm no featherweight), which means my kids can't really use it.  The rigid tube connecting the main body to the vacuum head is a fixed length, making it unwieldly for smaller kids too.  It lacks versatility too - for cleaning the car, for instance, while you can swap out the heads for various tools and connect them direct to the main body, the weight balance is all off and it's too bulky to get into small places.  You can buy a flexi hose as an accessory which would make it easier to use in the car, but I still haven't got round to buying one after four years and just take my car down to the local car wash and use the hose vacuum cleaner there.

Would I buy a Dyson stick vacuum again?  Possibly not.  Maybe a smaller one for "in-between" cleans and have a regular vacuum cleaner for whole-house cleaning.

Got an Electrolux with a turbo head... head replaced under warranty 4 times so far... the turbine that drives it is made of tick-tack container offcuts and  even something like plastic pin-head going through it will break the fins off causing to to go out of balance and destroy itself.

Thanks to you all for your advice. I think we will be going with the Miele.

But another question for you. Bagless or Bag vacuum cleaner?

Bag, Have both versions in the Miele range and Electrolux range.

Bag seems to be better for general dust containment

I have a Miele C3 Complete I believe. Section isn't an issue and it's otherwise a good vacuum - but to be completely honest it's nothing amazing for the $700 or so it was, it's just another vacuum with a HEPA filter. Lives under the house now

For convenience I have a Samsung Jet 90 that can also hot swap batteries. Sucks well enough and the convenience means it gets used for what the robot can't get.

Thanks for these replies very interesting as we were considering getting a Miele C3 but sounds like there is no real benefit over our existing Dyson V8 which I've already modded with an Ozito compatible battery adapter from Amazon.

Just to let you all know that I bought a Miele Blizzard CX1 Excellence Bagless and I am very pleased with the results.

Also I got it from Noel Leeming and got a price match!

That is a very sleek machine.  I just had to look it up.  How much may I ask?

Nice, interesting choice given most people go Miele to avoid bagless, let us know how it goes.

Have had a Dyson V11 and have never looked back. Copes with dog & cat hairs and carpet. The only thing I'd like is a bigger catchment area but there is an option for that now too.
