See above, they (ESCORT NZL) received the unit via REPCO their re-seller.

They i.e. REPCO NZL and ESCORT NZL are all seemingly useless, so no longer in the Good Books.

Waiting on MadEngineer to log on, going to send it to him, and reward him for his soldering skills very amply.

So why can't you get it repaired via head office if they agree with your view? or get their report to be sent to Repco (or better yet get head office to tell repco to replace/repair the faulty unit)?

In case anyone's hanging out for an update, hopefully I'll have time in the weekend to have a look at this.  In the mean time, here's today's not-fix in something completely unrelated:

Blown MOV with further damage.

You can see where the smoke has leaked out. Just get some new smoke, refill it then patch the hole ;-)

They generally avoid this repair because it's prone to failure again in the future with a missing pad(especially one of the closest pads) but the customer always expects a 100% fix. Depends on switch design it might be able to be epoxied in place after a repair.

It's inherently a weak design because the button force is applied inline to the pads on the board instead of at 90 degrees. I can't see any strain relief on the mechanical system either so the electrical system takes all the load.

Probably ok in some cases such as well applied solder and users who use a light touch but once you get an imperfection in the assembly all bets are off and failure comes to visit.

Do you want to post the power supply for me to test it?

One of the pads was ripped off unfortunately but I was able to clean back a bit of the trace and get some solder on it.

The little micro switches are horrible. They have a slight squishiness to them as you press before going click. This I suspect may result in one pushing it harder to make it work. Especially if you’re using the combo press of holding one down to then press the other for “PREF”
