What's driving us nuts is it doesn't turn off again after we've muted.

I assume you mean ‘unmuted’.*

We have not had that problem.

*Edit: Just realised that what you wrote may be read two ways.

That was a week go - and it seems I spoke too soon. Tonight, watching The Chase, subtitles are showing when not muted. These are not the old type of TVNZ subtitles - they’re the new ‘subtitles when muted’ type. Went to settings in ATV and turned-off ‘Show subtitles when muted’.

After that, the subtitles initially stayed off when unmuted - but then reappeared after 5-10 seconds and nothing simple I can do gets rid off them. Bloody annoying - not least because the subtitles cover the questions and the multi-choice answers during the ‘chase’ part of each contestant’s turn.

Not sure what's going on, no issues since I turned it off on mine 🤷

Do you have automatic updates on for apps?

Yes. I’ve tried everything I can think of - including a hard reset of the ATV.

Yes I did that on Sunday and got a ticket number. So far haven’t heard a peep from them even though I chased them yesterday.

It was still screwed-up yesterday. This evening it’s all OK. I have no idea how/what/why.

Give them a moment, they probably have no idea what is going on and are trying to figure it out! 😄 But at least now it's on their radar to fix.

I finally received a response from TVNZ Support - three weeks so not exactly speedy service. They said:

Thanks for getting in touch with TVNZ.

We experienced a technical issue where live captions are being auto-populated in IOS and Apple TV devices without the ability to turn off and on. The team have a fix in place so you should be able to use your remote to bring the caption button up and switch them off in the video player.

We apologise for any disruption to your viewing. If the problem is still occurring let us know.

At least they have acknowledged it - I wasn’t imagining it and it wasn’t something I was doing. I’m surprised more people did not comment on it.
