gzt: .

Anchor butter sold in the UK is made in the UK using British milk. Since 2012 Arla Foods UK has had the license from Fonterra to produce and market Anchor in Britain.

I did not know that, so that is why my cousin pays only 2 quid per pound normal and 1 quid on special.

I thought it was all shipped from NZ, they are still paying way less than us.

To answer your question: you become more prosperous by re-investing that money into something that can do better.

Like flipping mouldy houses, amiright?

You are wrong.

THAT would be the government. The non compliance years after private landlords had to comply was HUGE.

F&P was a waste when it got sold off really cheaply after the GFC. These dairy brands are just brand names so no great loss. New brands can replace them. But got to wonder why that big milk company isn’t trying to create extra value from their raw products. Didn’t know that that peanut butter company got sold but it was greatly overrated peanut butter imo.

Oh I agree. They should have been leading it rather than absolving themselves of it.

For reference, cheapest butter I can see in Tesco is GBP 9.25 a kg. Convert it to NZD at fx 2.3 you get $NZD21.20 a kg . Cheapest at pak n save is $16.60 a kg. So pretty reasonable.

Yes - £2/200g fairly standard price.

Costco is a lot cheaper though.  But in Oz their everyday low price in Woolworths is $7 Oz. So they pay less than NZ although don't get charged GST. Maybe that shows how much GST adds to cost of living crisis, because when food prices go up , so does the governments GST take on that food.

I hope it does not mean the end of the Anchor lactose free milk.

Me too. Somewhat annoyed that they have just recently scrapped the Trim low-fat lactose free so only now have Blue full(er) fat Lactose Free. I have a cholesterol issue and have been told to stick to low-fat dairy.

My wife has an issue with lactose, so we usually bought 1L of the Lactose free thicker milk and the 1L lactose free trim each week. Preferred the trim one for Tea.

Found the trim just vanished and now found out that Anchor have quietly dropped it.

I bought this (Lactase enzyme drops) last Thursday from the product's Australian site - Freight cost as much as the product - but it did arrive from South Australia in 4 days. ~$48NZD to the front door if anyone is interested.

Should do about 50 x 1L bottles - so ~$1 extra per bottle - might actually end up slightly cheaper than Anchor's product.

Couldnt find anywhere in NZ that sold lactase drops unfortunately.

We will have a go at DIY lactose free milk.

If you search for lactase tablets, there are options available in NZ that might be worth trying. Lacteeze is one I've seen at Chemist Warehouse, and there are one or two others (at least) from memory. If they work it might save you the freight cost, at least.

I saw the Lacteeze tabs (and other tabs), but you cant use them to remove the lactose from your milk.

Figured it was easier to de-fuse the milk in the bottle.

Looking online,

ASDA, Anchor butter 500g STG3.94 = NZD 18.24/kg

Sainsburys, Anchor butter 200g STG2.60 = NZD 29.9/kg

TESCO, Anchor butter 200g STG2.60 = NZD 29.90/kg

Pak'nSave Anchor butter 500g NZD9.99,  $8.68 excl GST = 17.37/kg

Pak'nSave Pams butter 500g $8.21, $7.21 excl GST = NZD 14.12/kg

Could not find 500g price online at Sainsburys or Tesco for plain salted or unsalted Anchor butter.

Note that VAT on butter in the UK is zero. GST on butter in NZ is 15%.

So in reality Anchor butter is as expected, cheaper in NZ than the UK. It is a commodity and just like gold, the price is similar anywhere around the world.

Coles Australia doesn't carry Anchor but basic butter around AUD $17.00/kg or NZD $18;15 excl GST - not cheaper than NZ.

Pak'nSave is cheapest in NZ. You can pay more at Woolworths or New World.
