Condolences to Rachel and your family. We met a handful of times, usually introduced as "the other MarkP".

Devastating loss.
Nick was and will always be remembered as a bloody good human.

I met him working at Snap where he nudged at me (a pretty socially awkward person) a few times for conversation around the office. When I eventually came out of my shell a little, we got to talking about being Otago/Highlanders rugby supporters and how it could be considered a health hazard in a Christchurch office.

Nick always had time for a yarn. Especially on a Friday when the pub down the road from the office had free savouries.
One Nick yarn that I will always remember was when he saw me wearing a New Orleans Saints jersey and begins telling me that he went to the Superdome for a Microsoft work function once and while in the bathroom taking a leak, he looked up and saw Bill Gates next to him at the urinal.. "see? The super rich take a piss just like you and me!"

Over the years Nick's big presence was always felt and I don't mean that because he was significantly taller than me but he had a massive personality. He always encouraged us to do our best at whatever we're doing. Always learning. Always be in pursuit of excellence and a positive experience. He was a great influence on people, both professionally and personally.

I'll miss the random phone calls throughout the year "just to check in" and the messages/calls on my birthday "before you have your first one".

Remembering a good old Southern man. Raise a Speights for him.

They say he carved that spoon himself.. From a bigger spoon..

I am in shock and have been now for the past few days.  On holiday ourselves it feels wrong to enjoy things but I also can hear Nicks voice in my head telling me to not be stupid (toned down for this forum). He was one of the people who employed me to Snap/2degrees originally and I recall I just couldn’t get a read on him at the time. But since then we became friends, as he seemed to do so easily, and I have so many memories of lunches, check-ins (head fantastic at just calling up to see how you were) and the odd camping catch up.
I feel honoured to have just had the opportunity to attend his 50th and I’m so thankful I got to see him so recently.
to Rachel and Nick’s sons, my deepest condolences- I simply can not imagine how hard this must be for you all.  ❤️❤️❤️

Nick worked for a time as Systems Practice Lead with us over here at Voyager and as a team we are all reeling from this. As others have mentioned he endeavoured to connect with people and see them fulfill everything he knew they were capable of. For me personally he would check in every month or so and we would catch up for lunches and talk about life. I'm thankful to have called him a friend and he will be missed.

@rachela my condolences to you and the kids. I can't even comprehend. In terms of those needs you mentioned, I know that we as a Christchurch tech community can help. When the time is right please don't hestitate to reach out.

This is a huge surprise for me.

I can remember him having work experience in his School uniform & been in touch regularly since then.

I wired Nick & Rachel's house for IT & RF after the Christchurch earthquake, while it was jacked up on 'Jenga'! (Luckily before I had a Stroke)

It was Rachel who emailed me a referral for the Stroke rehab & they both visited me in Hospital.

Nick will be sadly missed and I wish the best for Rachel.

Very sad to hear of someone so young passing.  Condolences to all the family.

Below is from his brother. Says pretty much what everyone else thought of him.

I've known Nick for over 25 years. We spend time together when we were in Christchurch together. Always the same friendly affable welcoming person.

This is where I learned of his passing and I can barely type.

RIP my friend.

Oh man what a shock, I would bump in to Nick at many events in Christchurch and have a good chat and catch up. This is so sad to hear this news Rachel, thinking of you and Family.

Disturbing news. Without knowing Nick personally, I always enjoyed reading his posts because they had substance. My sincere condolences from Germany.

I’ve lost a best friend, just devastating, its been a really hard week.

Nick was my boss for a few years, if you've ever worked for him you know; always fought for his people/team even if he had to take the blame to save us, and he did that many times.

Outside of work Nick was always there, he'd just call to check how you were going, update you on the latest telco gossip, but he had an intuition for knowing when you needed a chat too, that's what I'm going to miss most.
The other calls were his monitoring detecting issues on the network, it would start with a TXT, then a call, if I didn't answer then he'd post on Geekzone, then a TXT saying 'I've emailed your CEO' Mark knows him well haha.

Trashcan, Smokeping… we’ll get it sorted @rachela, im sure we can find some rack space for that.
He loved automation, so we need to make sure you can still open the gate, turn the lights on. Let Rob know, you have the whole 2degrees team in Christchurch here to help.

@aspired funny you mention the gates. I hate them. So many times over the years they've not open properly, or closed too early (twice they've scraped my car), or occasionally opened when I've been opening the garage. And when I complained to Nick to "please do something" his response was  "I don't know what the problem is, it doesn't happen for me" implying it was a me problem. The other day, when I arrived back into the country,  his boys picked me up from the airport, and when we arrived home... the gates didn't open properly. I swore skyward and we all laughed that Nick was playing tricks from afar.

I'm really glad you are here and hope you'll stick around. I am so sorry for your loss, he will be missed by many, which is a testament to how he dealt with others.

As it is with life, I wish now I had made more effort to spend time when I had the chance.

Wow.. very sad news indeed.

I didn't know him well, but I'd interacted with Nick on the forums and met him in person a few times through GZ meetups etc. He seemed like a genuinely great dude.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Goodness.  So young.  Chatted with Nick in the 90s hey-day of Trashcan when I was SYSOP of a much smaller BBS.

Occasionally we'd stumble across each other here on GZ in later years and somehow he always remembered me.

A great loss.
