My tiny 14" screen measures 300mm straight across, the TM preview site has 35mm of spare white space on either side. Thats about 24% wasted space.

Most of the changes are sensible and look good, however I really don't like the:

1: Main menu light blue tabs.
2: Fixed width layout, elastic or fluid would make more sense for a auction listing site.
3: Too much scrolling, they need to look into some Progressive Disclosure techniques.

Yeah on my 24" iMac those white bits on the side are pretty hideous, not to mention a complete waste of space!

I had sent them an email (thought it was a suggestions box) liking the new scheme overall but disliking the "FixedWidth" template that seems to plague most of the web. Got a response

"A fixed-width layout allows us to design our pages at one standard size to ensure a clean layout and maximum readability for all users"

The old dynamic width site worked wonderfully and I don't know anyone who disliked it. Why change it! As a result, we have lost things like quick login on the left (still come up on the same page if you click the top-link) and simple "sidebar" which I really liked. sigh...

Exactly.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that they wouldnt make changes that would hurt them..

but to be completely honest with you; I don't see how any of what they are showing in this preview actually benefits us.

I get a headache just looking at this preview.

+1 For the original design, cant quite put my finger on why, but the new one doesn't do it for me.

That's straight out of their FAQ.
Yeah, let them know what I thought of it as well

"Hate the new site. Fixed width is easy to develop for, but, not good for users. 1024x768 is not "optimum", it's actually really bad on a 1680x1050 screen. Optimum is having the screen resize to your resolution, as it currently does. Having nearly 40% of you screen white is actually really hard on your eyes. Please, leave an old version of your site accessible for those of us who does not fit in your view that 1024x768 is optimum, and, all people should view pages at this resolution."

Probably a bit harsh, but, having all that wasted space makes it much harder to absorb the information on the screen. Being able to read longer sentences, without having to have your eyes flick back and forth is more efficient.

Conceptually, I do like the new design, especially the search which really jumps out at you.

But I do much perfer a fluid design. Fixed width seems like easy way out, and I don't know many people who are still using 1024x768 these days. Most displays these days seem to be widescreen and it just results in wasted real estate.

Also the Sell Process is quite terrible, and only takes up about 60% of the already small fixed width. If they are going to make the site fixed width they might as well stretch this out, cos it looks quite silly.

Time will tell how well it is accepted, and like others have mentioned, Trade Me do not make changes like this without some solid evidence to back it up.

Narrow-minded, sounds like their html design team is 2000 and late imo.

There are a load of options for fluid or elastic layouts, hell even stepped layouts where you serve difference css for different resolution ranges.

regarding the fized size design, they would have looked at their stats to see the most common sreen resolutions used by their users and designed the site around that, makes sense, if you have higher or lower res, then tough luck I guess?

I want more data on the my trademe page - like the address and shipping method that buyers have chosen. And WHY does the sort by have to be a dropdown list - its 3 clicks to sort by price when one would do - its not like they are short of space to put buttons to sort, or use the column headings like every other website there is virtually.

I always liked having the left hand side box with the buying and selling options, I notice the new design has moved it to the top.
Maybe I just don't like change...
