timestyles: The only 100% accurate way of setting up a website with this idea is either for detailsme to provide auctions on Trademe and for people to bid $1 using buy now, and then detailsme will know the accurate email address, or for people to register with detailsme, then they are presented with a code. They place this code on an auction that they run and detailsme links the two together. Why didn't they think of this?

Good way to implement a checking system to verify a person has control of their own account.  My solution was to provide your username/password and the detailsme site would check if it's able to login as you.  Insecure, but it would work.

What would TradeMe's recourse be over this site? Surely a list of usernames and contact details it outside their grasp?

Yeah, that's another way.  My ideas aren't immediate, yours is.  Anyway, if this website gets a foot hold, I can see major changes in the way that Trademe would work.  Since people could bypass auctions, Trademe would get less success fees.  As a result, they could start charging for auctions, whether there is a sale or not.

Trademe could also change their terms and conditions to require that users did not enter their details into outside databases (and their accounts would be frozen if they did), if they did that, I'd imagine that any detailsme type website would be effectively shut down with no legal action involved.

This kind of thing has been done numerous times before, the last one I am aware of was a (Now defunct) site called Trader Contact. Exactly the same concept. There were also others before this.

It sounds like a good concept, but I think in reality there are too many privacy considerations for it to work in the 'collaborative' way that these sites are designed to.

That logo too, I'm no lawyer but I suspect there is some IP breach going on there.

Time will tell I guess - Funnily enough the 'community' has alrealy made their mark on the site.

Kraven:

The website is a totally bad idea for a whole lot of reasons IMO.

Its back up now, with 4+ times the number of traders it had yesterday, plus now says:

"When you add an entry it will remain pending until approved by administration".

It seems I can't search the letter "s" to bring up all traders with s in their name like I could yesterday, I must type in the exact name (which does work) or it finds 0 results.

Really don't like the idea of people putting your contact details up without your OK. When I am selling something on Trademe the last thing I want is some random calling me up and hassling me to sell it to him/her direct.
Not to mention that my home phone is not listed and it is that way because I don't want it listed. Not because I have anything to hide but just because any/every one we want to be able to call us has or is given our number.

So can traders who have their cell number on that site now expect txt spam too?

I can't see any way to ask for contact details to be removed once someone adds them which seems like a major problem.

Looks like you can use '%' as a wildcard in the search, although their ajax doesnt start working until the second character is inputted (Try %%).

By this method tho, it only looks like there is significantly less records in their DB than the 658 like the footer says.

Perhaps all the others are 'unconfirmed' or spam or whatever from yesterday

The stupid site breaches every principle of the privacy act, there's no way it will last.  It's a straight up dumb idea...

I for one think you don't understand what our Forum Usage Guidelines are - the ones you accepted before posting here.

You work for the company developing the site, so stop astroturfing. If you come here clearly saying "I work for the company behind this service and..." then we could give you a chance. Instead you come pretending to not be involved. This is not the way we do things here.

Banned.
