i've bought plenty from HN for commercial reasons. Their sale items are often as cheap as commercial deals though, and you still get interest free deals on top of that.

I noticed that too. I'm thinking of going and getting a copy of Office for Mac tomorrow and I guess I can hold them to 25% since they have advertised it and I don't think that advertising another conflicting price is necessarily a retraction of the originally advertised price.

The law doesnt work like that unfortunately. If it is a genuine mistake then DSE are not obliged to sell the item to you for that price as actual price isnt agreed upon until the point of sale. You may get lucky with the "false advertising" claim - but thats all it is, luck!!

honest mistakes are acceptable & defensible. it's the deliberately misleading advertising they are concerned about.

It's my understanding that by legal precedent this could be argued to be "false and misleading" unless a formal retraction has been published or posted in store. Having said that I wouldn't have the time or patience to take them to task over it, but it's a very sloppy look nonetheless.

I bet the ad says something like "While stocks last" or "Limited stock" or something in the small print. THe other thread indicates there were something like 50 to 80 per store tops.

WhenI see this sort of a deal, I figure it's going to be like this, unless you are there queuing when the doors open, at the head of the queue, you won't get one, but Harvey Norman will have people coming in all day looking for them, and probably talked into buying something else. Is it an annoying, unpleasant, and potentially dishonest practice - yes, but is it a breach of the FTA, probably not, HN will be very careful not to do that.

Having just read the Fair Trading Act (it's really short) I can safely say this is not correct. The only statement relevant to this type of conduct is as follows, and includes no clauses even similar to what exportgoldman is speaking of.

False or misleading representations

No person shall, in trade, in connection with the supply or possible supply of goods or services or with the promotion by any means of the supply or use of goods or services,—
(a) make a false or misleading representation that goods are of a particular kind, standard, quality, grade, quantity, composition, style, or model, or have had a particular history or particular previous use; or
(b) make a false or misleading representation that services are of a particular kind, standard, quality, or quantity, or that they are supplied by any particular person or by any person of a particular trade, qualification, or skill; or
(c) make a false or misleading representation that a particular person has agreed to acquire goods or services; or
(d) make a false or misleading representation that goods are new, or that they are reconditioned, or that they were manufactured, produced, processed, or reconditioned at a particular time; or

Agreed. It seems like they do have a reasonable amount of stock for sale but when something is that cheap, it is bound to run out very quick. In this instance, they all disappeared in under 5 minutes.

Just braved going to The Base shopping centre (northern side of hamilton), traffic getting into it is backed up onto avalon drive...
also Harvey Norman's carpark is overflowing onto the vacant land across from it, queues for the checkout about 25 deep

I'm at work so can't go just for a look, however could arrange 30 minutes off if I knew of something that might interest me. ie xx% off car audio...

Well, I went into Dick Smith in Riccarton to get MS Office this morning and when it went through the checkout it scanned with a 20% discount as I suspected it would. I told the guy that I had seen 25% off all MS software promoted on their web site and in The Press this morning but he appeared to have no idea that 25% had been advertised until one of his teammates pointed out that there was a big sign in the software section that confirmed the 25% figure. After much confusion among several staff who got involved they eventually gave in and entered a manual discount for 25%.

So, I'm happy with the outcome but it sounds like someone at head office needs a kick up the backside for loading pricing that was inconsistent with their marketing, and the local staff need a kick up the backside for not familiarising themselves with their promotions and questioning the inconsistency prior to starting work on Boxing Day.

Ended up getting a 42" HD Panasonic Plasma for $998 at HN Wairau Park. There was also a 40" Full HD Sony for the same price, but no Freeview. Got the plasma for the color reproduction, though.

Got a 37" Samsung Full HD for $888 from JB Westgate myself. I wasn't aware what I was missing (had 26" Soniq HD Ready which I got a couple of years back for $800)

Harvey Norman had some good prices today on lots of stuff... I managed to restrain myself though (I didn't really NEED anything). The good price the salesman offered me on a JB Matthew USB tuner nearly tempted me though.

As for the rest of the stores I went to Bond and Bond, DSE, Noel Leemings, The Warehouse.... I was very underwhelmed with the 'sale' prices. (sale - Yeah Right)
