alasta: It's political correctness gone mad.

I think that smokers should have enough courtesy not to smoke in areas where it would cause a problem to non-smokers, but common courtesy isn't something that can be forced.

I agree, common courtesy goes a long way, as a smoker myself I personally can't stand the smell of cigs and try to avoid smoking around non smokers and I don't smoke in public while I'm working.

mckenndk: I agree with banning smoking completly, my work takes me around the CBD in wellington, alot of the time between HSBC tower and ANZ tower which I nick name Smoker Ally as it is always full of smokers.
I don't like walking between these buildings as you can't avoide breating in the fumes and I believe they should ban smoking there as the airflow is not that great (another reason people like sitting around there I guess).
I have always known that Cable car lane is smoke free so why do smokers not notice?

I almost went to complain to the manager of the telecom store the other day when two telecom staff were smoking right outside our door to avoid being seen smoking around their store but they were still showing off their telecom branded shirts etc so it was very easy to know where they were from.
Maybe at least ban smoking within 20meters of building entrances and beaches etc would be a start.

One thing I am happy to say about the team of 13 people that i work in none of us smoke and that I believe also increaces our turn over of jobs as we don't spend at least 20min of every hour being paid to smoke (which is not allowed in the contract but other departments don't police it).
My work colouge in his previous job actually went outside with the smokers and went for a walk while they were smoking and when his manager questioned it as he was not a smoker his response was "if they can have 20min every hour to have a brake and be paid for it so can I" and they instantly clamped down on it that they could only smoke at the designated break times.
So I can see banning it being a win win situation for people's health and companies alike.

bring on smoke free New Zealand.

ah is it illegal for telecom staff to smoke in their branded shirts? i know my friend works at a bank and the boss allows him to smoke directly outside the bank in his uniform at lunchtime.

if you don't want to breathe in smoke why don't you hold your breath when walking through 'smoker ally'?

I often contemplated the same action when the smokers at my work were sitting in our courtyard over summer. When they were all huddled up in the bus shelter out the back over winter? Not so much

There are so many arguments too and from smokers v non-smokers

I dont believe a smoker should have any more breaks than a non - smoker esp. in an office environment,

that said you should have at least a 15 minute break after ever two hours work (or something like that) to maintain peak efficiency / performance.

as for smoking outside, I"m an occasional cigar smoker, and ex-ciggarette smoker, and there are times where I'm almost choked by clouds of smoke in various areas,

however the same thing happens when i'm walking along a number of roads (say willis street) and a dirty ol' diesel bus puts the foot down and I get a mouthful of diesel.

personally If I'm smoking I try to stay far away from the non-smokers as I dont want to interfere with anyone else.

Saying that I note that McDonalds staff are never out smoking in their uniform.

Along with the increase in taxes, I'd seriously like the WCC to introduce large fines for discarding matches & butts on the road / footpath / wherever they feel like it. I'd sign a petition for that. The amount of litter most smokers make is disgusting.

I totally agree with you, with the exception of courtenay place, everywhere in wellington has a more than sufficient availability of
cigarrette butt bins, and regular rubbish bins.

courtenay place needs additional logistical considering for weekends and large events.

-- these are times I think they should definitely have designated pubilic smoking areas, along with smoking areas at pubs,

no general smoking though.
