tardtasticx: Besides why do you want one? The staff at the shops I've been to in Auckland couldn't organize a p!5S up in a brewery, let check if they have any ipods in stock.

In the CBD store, most of their employees seem to be "music geeks" who will know all sorts of obscure bands and albums, but don't know anything about tech.

It would appear that retailers are 'damned if the they do, damned if they don't ' as far as offering assistance to customers goes.
I have been into and purchased items from JB HiFi stores in Albany, Westgate, New Lynn, Hamilton, Wellington, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne, and bought everything from a 50" plasma to a CD. I like their relaxed level of assistance, where if you say you are just looking, they leave you alone. And most of the salespeople are willing to negotiate if their PDAs will let them.
If you want an indication of whether they have got things right have a look in the an electronics retailer near a JB store and compare the number of customers (picture tumbleweed rolling through the aisles).

As for South Island stores..... patience grasshopper! They appear to require a critical population mass at the moment, which would bode well for Christchurch and Dunedin (particularly because of Dunedin's student population). At the moment they have probably got half of NZ's population within half an hour of one of their stores. As for me, I have 4 stores within that distance

Which I thought was a little ironic.

Another gives praise for personal service at a local strip club/bar!

You're dead right in saying that those ads contain fake testimonials...
The 2nd out of the 3 testimonials in the Dunedin radio ads are clearly some woozer pinching his nose and putting on a voice...
But I digress.
To my understanding, JB's will be in Chch by the end of 2010.

I haven't heard that they are taking over the applicance part of Smiths City (LV Martins / Powerstore etc). But they do share the same buying group. If they did take over, they'd have a Nationwide presence and their dominance could quickly follow their Australian success (where they make HNorman look like noobs).
