Well you should not be allowed on the road the sooner the LAW is changed about this matter the better. You should get a bigger fine and more demerit points for not having 3rd party insurance

Hope there insurance nails you to the wall. I have been hit by uninsured drivers more than once

if you can afford a car you can get insurance, i baught a subaru heavily modified with 3rd party insurance for less than $500 bucks a year, i would seriously look at buying insurance now, or selling your car to make up for the costs of the other driver.

I suspected you didn't have insurance when you said it was like a nightmare and the other persons insurance company was after you too.

A very harsh lesson, but hopefully one learnt well - if you can afford to drive on the road you *can* afford 3rd party insurance at the very least. It can save you a great deal of money and hassle.

(Not to mention saving upsetting johnr!!)

I agree, the fact that you are not simply having a whinge about police or trying to make excuses shows maturity. Trust me I'm only 23 but have had far too many run ins with the police for my heavy foot (no I'm not a boy racer) but I can only blame myself everytime it has happened when I know full well what the consequences are for breaking the law.

Regarding the insurance thing, everyone should certainly be insured and you will no doubt have learnt your lesson (I hope!) but what you can expect in this situation is the owner of the other vehicle will be paid out or repaired by their insurance company, and the insurance company in turn will seek money from you. It may be that they are granted a court order for you to pay them back weekly as much as you can afford.

I have NEVER understood why successive NZ Governments refuse to follow Australia's example & make third-party insurance compulsary (maybe because they are all self-serving tossers!) when registering a vehicle.

Here's one to think of: you are driving along the road, minding your own business. A car side-swipes you, writes off your car & the driver has no licence. You have no insurance, he has no licence: now there's karma. I know things are expensive, but not as much as you are finding out: a lesson learnt the hard way. It wasn't a Buggatti Veyron, was it?

Finally, ever seen the "bad calls at intersections" ads. I guess you weren't paying attention. These aren't criticisms -well, OK, they are...but- most Humans make them. It's just the compounding aspect that really hurts. Driving is one area where experience does count. As long as the person has the integrity to learn & apply the lesson. I think you are one such.

I drive Auckland's roads more than most, due to my occupation. You wouldn't believe most of what I see some days. 80+ blatant red-light runners, most weekdays; that's just for starters. Don't get me started..............

yes i have seen bad calls at intersections. never mind i kinda feel like people are word bashing me for making a mistake. i got my questions answered im happy for this thread to be locked now.

That will be because those that don't have insurance often don't have a WOF or registration either.

Compulsory insurance is just a scam by insurance companies to make money from a captive market, just the same as Kiwisaver.

In the UK police cars have ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras linked to the police database to check whether the car is stolen, the licensing database to check whether the car is licensed and MOT'd (WOF'd) and insurance databases to check whether the car is insured.

So all the old Bill have to do is trundle around and their on-board computer alerts them any time it see a suspect car.

Big Brother certainly, but all bases are covered.

I don't know whether I like the idea, or loathe it!

This has always bothered me. If the demerits are set to the infringement, then why on earth can't police tell you on the spot? Or at least in the following correspondence from them. Or even a separate letter from NZTA to confirm you have demerits.
Given the insurance implications of not completely disclosing your driving record, just 20 demerits matters!

I was not impressed by the procedure when I got pinged for failing to keep left (cutting corner). Of course I was at fault, not blaming the cop, just the enforcement system.

Mine didnt at all, and iirc it didnt have a field for demerits either. This was November last year.

It may have had a table on the back listing the demerits corresponding to different speeds (i think), but certainly not for other offences.

There isn't a specific box for demerit points in traffic tickets as not all infringements carry demerits - at least there wasn't when I last saw a ticket 6 or 7 years ago. Some cops will write the demerits on there, some won't. They don't have to.

On that note, some may not know whether specific infringements carry demerits or not. The books they carry to advise them of correct infringement wording and offence codes doesn't list demerits either - only fine amounts.
