How does it depend on the police officer?

Police are agents for the NZ Transport Agency (until they rename themselves again) and as such do not issue demerit points.

Aslong as you were handed a ticket, you can be pretty much guaranteed you will have to pay $150 and get 20 demerits against your licence.

So how do you tell if you have demerits or not? I was fined last year for speeding but at no stage were demerits even mentioned either at the time or on any subsequent paperwork.

Ah. I see.. the demerit points are handled seperately and are worked out from the fine given from the police.

My understanding is that the demerits are handled by the NZTA after the police have processed your infringement.
Every infringement has a precedent code, and depending on the offence, each precedent code has a demerit value assigned to it.

I suggest you call the NZTA to find out our current demerits, and their expiry.

Correct, yo can make payment online or to westpac when you take your infringement notice along.

I know this sounds harsh, but I guess now you know why you should give way?

Be thankful you are not being fined here in Australia. Traffic fines start at $250!!

Let me get this straight... You failed to give way, caused an accident, and are complaining about fine and demerit points?

+1

Harden up and take the consequences. After all you made a mistake and you are gonna pay for it.

I got a $230 speeding ticket just over 2 weeks ago and 35 demerit points

I am guilty as charged, Only one person to blame even though I was going with the flow of the traffic

I paid the ticket ASAP

Looks like he was listing the consequences of his actions, not complaining.

OP: Be grateful for the outcome you have, if you caused serious injury to yourself or others (I am presuming not to be the case here!) then you could be living with something much worse than financial repercussions.
