And who cares if it is? It bothers me to no end that there's anger towards Police for 'revenue gathering' when it's the criminals who are conducting the 'revenue generating'. If people are so irked by the authorities collecting money for their speeding fines, surely the better idea is to not speed rather than accuse the Police of so-called revenue gathering tactics. You break the law, you get fined, YOU generate the revenue for the Police.

Be cool if you could by private ones that pick up stolen cars as you drive around. Then just dial 111 when you are following a stolen vehicle! Imagine heaps of people being able to spot stolen cars. Would make it harder for the crims I bet. Probably the privacy act would have issues though...

simplestuff: Imagine what would happen if the police started using flip videos in everyday situations. Perhaps the law could be changed to accept these as evidence Judges could make decisions on video evidence, and then perhaps the police wouldn’t have the laborious task of writing report, reports could refer to video evidence stored on hard drives. Then perhaps they could spend more valuable time out preventing and assisting in the community. Great to be able to dream

Police have actually already commented on this. They are reluctant to go down that road as they believe it will then become harder to get a conviction in cases where no footage is available.

He probably isn't an angel on the road, very few are. But he probably also realises that the police allow for some discrepency with the speed limit, in a 50km area you would need to exceed the limit by 20% to actually get a ticket.

Now anyone who claims they can't tell the difference between 50 and 61 probably needs to pay a bit more attention to their driving in the first place.

The only real exception to this rule is outside schools etc where you will most likely get a ticket for doing 56km which is my opinion is more than fair.

That is not the case. Police will use their discretion when issuing tickets. Anything 5km/h and you can expect to get a ticket. However, the tolerance outside schools, is NIL! So 51km/h in a 50km/h zone, you can expect a ticket.

Speed cameras, the tolerance is 10km/h or 5km/h in a school zone.

Sorry but you are incorrect. I do this job everday so i do know a bit about the rules.

Here is some info from the police website:

"From February 2007, Police will strictly enforce the speed limit within 250 metres on each side of a school's boundaries. If you drive past a school at 55 km/h in a 50 km/h area, you will be ticketed."

Police Speed Enforcement Policy
The current Police speed policy specifies that:

Drivers of vehicles other than heavy motor vehicles who exceed the speed limit by less than 11km/h will not normally be issued with an infringement notice providing their speed does not present a risk to public safety in the prevailing circumstances.

These principles do not constitute a mandate for drivers to exceed the speed limit. In some circumstances exceeding the speed limit by less than 11km/h will pose road safety risks.

Now you could possibly receive a ticket for doing less than that but only if their are exceptional circumstances or the district you live in is running a zero tolerance approach, normally over a holiday weekend or similar.

If you are getting tickets outside of these parameters I would be complaining.

I did not say you will get a ticket, just that you can expect one.

I realise that you have to be travelling 5km/h over to be guaranteed a ticket, but how will the general public know when a zero tolerance operation is happening, hence my comment to expect one if you are exceeding? Better for people to be cautious, than stupid.

Maybe my explanation was too dumbed down.

Generally zero tolerance periods are well advertised.

You also mentioned there is a zero tolerance approach outside schools but this is not the case.

The point I was making was that road users that are aware of their speed are not going to be given tickets willy nilly. Those that get ticketed in my experience know full well they were speeding but chose to do this for whatever reason.

I know tickets are a contentious issue and always will be but there is plenty of studies that have been done here and overseas that clearly show a direct correlation between even minor increases in overall average speeds and the road toll.

Coming back on topic ANPR cameras are another tool to be used but can't replace staff on the ground. I think they would be more appropriate locating stolen vehicles or other vehicles of interest rather than vehicles with no reg or wof.

Hey you guys – does anyone know a NZ supplier of the ANPR software? Just that we have a NPR camera up and running and would like to be able to fire the plate numbers into a database for our enforcement people to access if there have been any problems.
