It's hardly surprising that the other media companies attacked him - they have something to gain in doing so.
Heck - not only will a slice of the advertising revenue pie be redistributed from TVNZ to newpapers / radio / interweb... they may also end up being able to employ the guy!
He may well end up on Radio Live, he could well turn up on ZB - writing columns etc etc.

It's not the end of the world for PH by any stretch of the imagination... in fact, I'd suggest that his stock has risen!

DataCraft: I have met the governor general - very nice man, I am not defending his actions - I am pointing out - Paul Henry apologised to the governor general, he accepted it - lets move on.

I thought this was the case but didnt want to put it in my post incase I was from. The GG seemed pretty relaxed about the hole thing. He was smiling and everything. He didnt ask for Paul to be fired.

My opinion of Nzers has really gone down hill over this. The people he so called "offended" (GG + Sheila) seem as if they dont really mind about the whole thing. Its just other people who think its wrong.

Ive always held Paul in high regard. If I was running some kind of Media company id be first in line to get him onboard.

stuzzo: I just hope they find someone more interesting than Rawdon Christie. He has the personality of a postage stamp.

I'd watch the show for the news.

If I wanted personality I have several people here at home who fill that gap. I don't need to turn the TV on.

The government had nothing to do with it, so it's still intact. You can still say all the racist stuff you want on TV..

Good Riddance!!!

Hopefully with the money TVNZ saves it can put it somewhere that counts. Maybe they can take back the Bathurst coverage, with live uninterrupted Australian feeds(maybe will small scrolling adverts along the bottom and a news ticker)

GeekGuy: Good riddance.

+1. The guy is immature and a dickhead - perhaps a good interviewer on current affairs stuff but doesn't know when to stop when off the leash.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Anyone is free to say whatever they want. He said something inappropriate at work which has consequences.

Keywords here are "at work". "Freedom of Speech" is a political right. In private matters it simply doesn't exist.

to be honest, I've been struggling with the concept that what he said was racist. I got that it was offensive, but racist ?

So maybe it's me !. Maybe I'm behind the times with the concept of racism, so I took a read of the link, and well.

"The reality is: it was a racist assumption that a Fijian Indian didn’t represent “New Zealand” since he, frankly, wasn’t white."

"wasn't white" !. - Yup, if PH had said "blah blah next GG should be white" to the PM, then sure, I got it - that's racism at it's worst.

But he didn't ! - the closest he came to colour was that the current GG does not "look" like a NZ'er. And the leap that he meant "not white" so he must a racist, and it's a racist comment  seems to have been the main drive by a lot of people/commentators on this on .

Is "does not look or sound like a NZ'er" by itself racist ?

I'm up for convincing on this. Part of me can see why racism comes into play here, but not for the
"wasn't white" aspect.
