BurningBeard: Oh, "Dax Riggs"... amazing song writer.

Used to be a metal guy but has mellowed out into a pretty decent singer/song-writer. "We Sing of Only Blood or Love" is his absolute best album - all killer, no filler. Hard to pin a style on him, but I hear quite a bit of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, T-Rex and some Alice in Chains for a bit of a dark junkie kinda vibe. Has a great Richard Thompson cover song too.

__

And I cannot recommend "CLUTCH" highly enough. Good fuzzed-out rock that should be on the radio every day but for some reason haven't cracked the mainstream. Pretty much blues-based, 70's-tinged big fat riffs... the quirkiness of Frank Zappa and the punch of Black Sabbath. Essential listening: Blast Tyrant, Elephant Riders and Strange Cousins from the West.

++ to both of these, Both deserve to be household names, I'm converting everyone who I play it for to Clutch, saw them live at Soundwave last year and they were brilliant live.

I'll suggest Baroness, I can't quite describe them adequately but upbeat stoner metal with some beautiful guitar work. They opened for Metallica in Auckland so you may have heard them already.

Mastodon's Crack the Skye is a fairly memorable Prog Rock/metal album worth a listen or two, they grow on you.

If you've never listened to them go back and give Black Sabbath's first few albums a listen, they still sound as magnificent now as they did then.

Katatonia's last few albums are quite impressive, kinda like Opeth lite.

I don't know your tastes at all but if you do like it a bit heavier then give Scar Symmetry's album Holographic Universe a listen, It's Death Jovi, Think big riffs, memorable vocals, catchy and heavy melodic death metal.

And a second ++ for Tainted, got to support the local boys, couldn't be a nicer bunch of people and I only know half of them.

Out of curiosity, who do you know? (I was the first vocalist/guitarist pre-2007)

I know Tim and Liam, and i've chatted to Linley in town a few times, probably should have met Leith having known his brother for a few years. It's a small world in Christchurch for Rock and Metal. I wouldn't be surprised if we've drunk in the same pub at the same time on more than one occasion.

Well i often find my MP3 player on either The Who's Tommy or Pink Floyd's The Wall. The other most common music played would be Wolfmother, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Darude, Iron Maiden and Eminem.

As for above named stuff St Germaine is pretty good too if you want chillout sorta music.

I have been giving a lot of thought to Jean Michel Jarre (Oxygene) lately although haven't got round to playing it yet.

As you can see by my answers and a lot of other peoples there's a wide range enjoyed by all. OUt of all my above named music Wolfmother would be the one that is the newest.

Last album bought was online from Digirama..... Head Like a Hole - 12.

Yeah there's a good chance I might recognise you if I saw you.

Linly and I went to primary and high school together. He was the last out of my "group" to pick up the guitar but wow, he sure left us all in the dust back at Linwood High School. Met up years later again in the music scene. He was the cool new kid from Oklahoma when he moved over here - he's mostly shed that accent though. Tim used to play in Human, and my old band (when I was a drummer) supported them back when I was a little grommet. You're right about ChCh being small!

*like like like* I love a good mix, good stuff.

Oh yeah baby, that's gold that one. Oxygene and Equinoxe are essential synth classics.

My latest listens are Angus and Julia Stone for a mellowed out acoustic vibe, Lissie for a mellowed kooky rock vibe an The Naked And Famous for some seriously good electro pop.

Burning Beard I would obviously have to agree with you.

It was one of the few things I got from my dad when he was alive was a taste for practically all music as honestly i pretty much like all types with exception to opera (mainly to not hearing enough to make a judgement so would and am not adverse to listening to and or going to see a show).

He used to buy imports all the time like Kraftwerk (Autobahn is my fave for them) and a lot of others this is going back 25+ years ago as that's how long he has been gone.

Also like Yello, Vangelis, Mike Oldfield Tubuler Bells, and Tangerine Dream

Some of these imports were nearing $30 which for the early to mid 80's was a huge amount to pay for a record.

Edit I forgot Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds.  I love that listen to it semi often hehe I have also got the stage show they did a few years back on dvd man i so regret not spending the money time and effort to see it.  If it came around again i would not pass up on that opportunity :-(

Bought an album called "Inner Speaker" from a band called "Tame Impala". Great beatles-like grunge-pop.

Love it. I think there's a sample or two on the band's website: www.tameimpala.com including a cool video of their song "Lucidity".

Really great I think.

Thanks so far for all the suggestions. Going to have to go through and sample them online and see what I like.

I was going to just link to my top rated playlist in iTunes but there is 800 songs in it so wouldn't be that helpful. Here is my top 25 most played (by artist, not individual songs). It may interest you if you are into a bit of everything. I'm quite into liquid drum & bass, if you want, check out some kiwi girls tracks for free on their website. Pretty great stuff. You need to rummage through the blog to find the tracks though.

I use to be a big fan of Bob Marley back in the day, now I can't listen to any of his music I just hate it.  Still like listening to Creed, Pink Floyd, Weezer, Prodigy & Stone temple pilots.
