If you want some inspiration for "proper" music to discover, try listening to Marc Riley on BBC 6Music (link should take you straight to Marc's page, pick a show and "listen again" for a couple of hours.)

Of course that's only my definition of "proper" (well, Marc's too I guess <lol>)

I mainly listen to Jazz, which is great chill out / background music.

Either the classics - John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Mingus etc.

For newer staff try look for Acid Jazz / Nu Jazz / Electro Jazz - Generally St Germain, Kid Koala, Mr Scruff, Jazzanova are good starting points

"Skindred" are spinning my wheels right now. Reggae/Metal hybrid with a bit of punk & hip hop thrown in. Great if you want some amping heavy stuff but don't want aggro and hate. A straaaaange mix of styles but they combine them extremely well.

I like to use last.fm to find new music. Enter in an artist / band that you like, and last.fm will bring up a range of similar artists. Found Savatage and Trans-Siberian orchestra in this manner, amongst others.

Oh, "Dax Riggs"... amazing song writer.

Used to be a metal guy but has mellowed out into a pretty decent singer/song-writer. "We Sing of Only Blood or Love" is his absolute best album - all killer, no filler. Hard to pin a style on him, but I hear quite a bit of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, T-Rex and some Alice in Chains for a bit of a dark junkie kinda vibe. Has a great Richard Thompson cover song too.

__

And I cannot recommend "CLUTCH" highly enough. Good fuzzed-out rock that should be on the radio every day but for some reason haven't cracked the mainstream. Pretty much blues-based, 70's-tinged big fat riffs... the quirkiness of Frank Zappa and the punch of Black Sabbath. Essential listening: Blast Tyrant, Elephant Riders and Strange Cousins from the West.

@burningbeard: Liking the sound of your recommendations, will check them out - cheers!

EDIT: Wow, LOVING Skindred, just checked some of their stuff on youTube. Started out big into thrash metal, but the last few years been enjoying heavily groove-based stuff much more as a general rule, so naturally Skindred is a good fit.

LastFM is a great music discovery tool, I love it!

Just lately I have been getting into some Orishas (cuban hip-hop with contemporary beats mixed with some traditional cuban music), great summer time jams.

Listening to the latest Mushroomhead album (alternate metal), its OK, but I'd recommend their album XIII (the one with a metal cover of Crazy by Seal embedded in the last track).

Kings of Leons new album, although I'm a bit disappointed by it.

Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" finding its way into my playlists pretty often of late.

The Hotel Costes series, mix albums, is a nice chillout series. Enjoying Number 3, which has a great remix of Shirley Bassey's "Where Do I Begin".

Lots of Metallica, having been to both of their Auckland gigs.

Pantera when I'm pissed off from work and commuting home!

EDIT: Doh! Can't believe I forgot to mention Rodrigo y Gabriela! Amazing mexican guitar duet, instrumental stuff but with so much life in it! They have two studio albums, the latest is 11:11, and is a significant advance on their first album (first album worth buying just for their cover of Stairway to Heaven though). Interesting mix of influences too, definitely some metal inspired stuff in their flamenco/classical/latin tunes. Plenty of good youtube vids of them, like the one where they cover Stairway to Heaven and Rodrigo is wearing a black slayer shirt and headbanging!

Awesome! Glad ya like 'em. They're a Welsh band too - such a crazy mix of, um, everything.
