We do have a horrible culture of violence here - stuffed if I know what has allowed it to take hold.

I dont think I am alone in being very cautious when the lights change and the car in front doesnt move. I wait for quite a while before blipping the horn - I have seen road rage (not aimed at me fortunately), and its just over the top.

I noticed drivers in Paris last year round around one of the huge roundabouts in the middle of town - there are cars coming from all over the place. They toot occasionally but didnt seem to get stressed by it - I remember thinking if that was Auckland it would be like the worlds biggest boxing ring!

Put 'adults' in charge of a car or a small child and it seems tolerance seems to vanish.

http://www.socialreport.msd.govt.nz/people/ethnic-composition-population.html

In 1996, Maori were 15% of the population.

http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/Files/phot_99_104/$file/phot_99_104.pdf

In 1997, of the 204 hospitalizations for injury that year on 0-14 years of age inflicted by other persons 68% were Maori kids.

NZtechfreak needs to look at statistics and not rely on personal experience which in medicine, we consider a low level of evidence.

Kaos36: Hone Harawira needs to get off his high horse and speak out against Maori beating their children to the nation telling Maori beating their children is wrong there's no mana in doing this how can Maori be a proud people when we have the highest rate of beating our kids!.

Brought up by a Maori mother and Croatian father. The only time my mother hit me was twice during my childhood life. Once when I was nine I called her a fat bitch. So I got what was coming. She chased me around the house with a broom which was quite easy getting away from her as mum was fat.  I thought if I hide under the bed she'll never find me there! Well she did and wracked me or more poked me with the broom until i came out from under the bed then she clipped me around the ears and sent me to the bedroom for the rest of the day. Then at the end of the day she came in and gave me a hug and sent me to have dinner.  2nd time was when I punched my sister on the arm cause she called me a black bird and laughed.  For some reason I just lost it and punch her on the arm quite hard where she went crying to mummy and mummy gave me another clip around the ears and sent me to my bedroom till dinner time.

My father never once hit me. He would just stare me down and say dont do that again. That was enough for me to stop doing it.

I disciplined my two sons but never beat them.  Hugs is the best thing a child can receive from their parents after a smack. Not straight after a smack later on maybe after you got them to clean their room or do the dishes then give them that big hug. They will love you for it.  Remeber that dads to be. :D

Some Maori out there look up to Hone, they have had a violent upbringing in the home where the violence will repeat over and over for generations to follow. Unless something is done their children will beat their children and so on. If Hone made a speech about the wrongs of beating your kids they will listen. Some will not care but Im sure the majority will take note. Plus I think he would earn back some respect from all New Zealanders.

This should be number one on the to-do list for the Maori Party.

So your mum hit your ears because of some words you said? Your mother had no right to hit you just because you called her some words. If you called the police your mother would have been arrested which may have taught your mother that child abuse is wrong. Why didn't you call the police?

Because that was discipline. There is a fine line between discipline and abuse

So, based on the above statistics, Maori kids were over 6x more likely to be hospitalised on account of injury, and 86% of those injuries were inflicted by the kids' parents.

Are you for real?  Back then if I called the police and told them my mum clipped me around the ears cause I called her a fat bitch they would probably say good on her & laugh.

My mother had every right to clip me round the ears. Im not damaged cause of it.  The difference is I wasn't beaten I was smacked/clipped round the ears.

Perhaps she might have done more damage if you hadn't sensibly exhausted her by running around the house first!

Yeah... its an alarming statistic among Maori and needs serious addressing but what about the other 32 %.
What makeup were they ?

Unfortunately the MOH doesn't break up the statistics any more than that.

I presume that the information is there somewhere.

hahaha.

Nah she was kind loving mother with good morale, she never drank nor smoked though she loved the roast dinners, being brought up in Ngatea on a drystock farm we had roast dinners practically 7 days a week. lol.  A smack now and then I deserved it.

One word: Mormon

Mormons dont smoke or drink alcohol nor any drink containing caffeine like coffee / tea. Father was catholic he liked his whiskey now and then.  Many Maoris in the Mormon religeon. Just check out Hamiltons Mormon Church 70 percent are Maori - non smokers/drinkers.    None of us kids followed suit though in becoming a member of the  mormon church.  I just dont believe their stats that we will one day all be Gods! Yeah right.

So, the answer is a religion which exhorts you not to beat your kids?

I think its more as a parent to know the boundaries - a smack/clip round the ears is just that. Some parents are too thick or cannot control themselves so the smack becomes a beating. Father was baptised a catholic but was no where religeous yet He never beat me.

But yes the Mormon faith does teach to respect others, dont beat your partner/children and the rest that comes with the christain faith. But I dont think religeon is the full answer, as their probably are god fearing christians that beat their kids thinking its the right thing to do "Do not spare the rod".  More education in self control/respect of others and most importantly respect in yourself. IMHO.
